Caesar gave the Germans and Vikings many business ideas such as Lego and Ikea.

10 days to build a bridge across a river using nothing but wooden poles and river rocks, meanwhile in my town, it takes 2 years to pave a singe lane roundabout...

It was a statement to the Germans. Your mighty river is no protection. We can so easily build a bridge to cross it, it means nothing to us to destroy it, and build another next time.

All legionaries were basically engineers. People forget that the roman legion was composed of soldier engineers, geometrists, architects, blacksmiths and logisticians

Rome was a remarkable culture. This and other known constructions really make it seem like Rome was only a few hundred years away from mass industrialization before it began its downturn.

I wonder how the world may have been if we had the industrial revolution in 600-700AD.

Fk me, need 100x this timescale just for planning permission for a shed here in London. For it to get denied and cost you 10x more than that bridge.

The logistics alone in feeding and maintaining an army of that size and on foot in foreign lands is an amazing feat in and of itself. We always see in the movies these images of them burning down towns, if anything I bet they used them as temporary bases and utilized their resources.

In the US, permitting alone would take 36 to 60 months.

The fear that a single bridge must have bestowed probably lasted for generations.

That would be so cool if they could find the original spot in some of the original piles

Caesar's campaigns in Europe are legendary to say the least.

He used bolsters to protect the piers. Something that was missing on the Key Bridge. We never learn.

He destroyed only half of the bridge, to give the Germans the advice he could rebuilt it quickly, if needed.

It's a statement, I can come for you anytime, the river isn't a barrier for me

How did they keep the rafts in place against the current while building? And how did they lift the piles out during dismantling? A Herculean task and one that should be considered amongst the marvels of the ancient world.

40, 000 men, how could that have even been orchestrated? The planning would be insane!

And we can't get pot holes filled. Absolutely amazing.

And then there was Roman concrete. Much of it still strong and standing even today.
