Whether it’s to remember someone’s time in combat or to show you paid a visit, coins left at headstones are a common grave good found in cemeteries. Next time you’re at a cemetery, leave a coin or two at the stones you visit.

I recently learned this about coins from a gentleman that was visiting his sons grave who died as a teenager. He told me why the coins where there. I'd never heard this before but had seen them on my nephews grave. Thanks for the information. ❤

I will be leaving a penny and a quarter at my dad’s rest spot in a military graveyard. We lost him 6months ago. ALSO-to leave a coin on a military stone means Respect and Honor

My fiance at the time left a 1 dollar piece at his great grandfather's grave, I remember sitting with him as he pushed the coin into the ground so nobody would steal it, as it was his grandfather's coin. A few months or so pass and we go back to visit, we notice the spot for the coin was completely gone and when we were looking for it, it was somehow back inside his wallet.. it's like his grandad didn't want him to leave it and wanted him to keep it close.

Very interesting fact regarding coins left on a verteran's headstones. In certain, high profile cemeteries, the maintenance staff gathers up coins, etc., .catalogs them and then puts them in secure storage.

However, what happens to the coins in other average cemeteries? Are they just left untill they are stolen?

My grandfather died in 2002, before I was born. Whenever we visit his grave, we leave a dime. My family believes it is his way of saying he loves us.

I went to visit my beloved granddads grave since he died in 2021 and found a penny on his marker that was dated the year he was born (1925). So odd to me, but I left it. He “technically” is a Korean War vet, meaning he was stationed somewhere in the United States and put behind a desk for 2 years until his time was up. Honestly we didnt want that marker because that wasn’t a big part of his identity at all. In fact he didn’t care at all about his short time in the army. But my uncles new wife managed to move in next to my grandma and take control of his funeral things.

I didn’t know that. I guess I’m putting a quarter down on papa. Bravest man I’ve ever met.
