I used to work for an infamous UK firm. The only thing even they would say at the start is "we wouldn't take your case on if it was worth less than £1000"

This applies across practice areas. In an initial meeting a lawyer can tell you very few specifics about your case and nothing about the likely outcome. If you have a lawyer who says "you'll get X amount" or "I'm going to get you off this charge" he's lying to you.

A good lawyer will keep your expectations low (without demoralizing you), isn't afraid to say "I don't know, but I will look into it, " and promises you only his very best efforts on your behalf.
