The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar. The Tender Bar is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I used to be a bartender in a local tavern. The characters were spot-on. The book was also excellent. The movie did it justice.

This movie is so amazing and it goes to show you that the 80s was truly a time when family dynamics were so deep and important unlike today. I tell my kids all the time they would have loved the 80s they already love the music for them to experience the 80s was on a whole new level. It made me rethink back to when I was young with my deadbeat dad and my mom and I lived with my grandparents and my grandfather was my role model the strong man that I needed in my life. This movie really touched my heart strings and it was nice to watch I look forward to reading the book, and I am so happy that JR went to Yale and became a book author
