Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone is an MMA Superstar and apparently addicted to diving like us!

He shared a story on the Joe Rogan Experience where he describes a cave dive he did in Mexico where he almost died.

We've received a couple of requests to react to this story, so here is our reaction.

I've noticed that the more experienced someone is in battling Mother Nature, the more humble they tend to be.

I'm dying laughing at the thought of his buddy on his way out, calmly holding on to the line, looking up to see the cowboy inflate his bcd, rocket to the top of the cave and spiderman his way out 🤣

I bet he would tell you how he almost burned to death when he filled up his car with gas. The fumes were so strong, ignition sources everywhere, he thought about writing a letter to his family, then the pump handle clicked and he knew he was going to make it home alive.

I don’t think the guy asked him “were never going to dive together again?” I’m pretty sure the guy told him, “we’re never going to go diving together again!”

I worked with a guy like this once. I heard millions of near death experiences where it was someone else's fault and he barely survived. lol

There’s the unwritten cave diving rule that if your buddy is in danger you stab him in the heart, much better than drowning. Get him out of his misery, someone has to come home.

Why do I feel like the old timer was telling cowboy " WE ARE not diving together again ! " instead of " we're not diving together again are we sir ? " lol

The crazy thing is, this story on the JRE is what made me search for more dive videos and discover your channel! So thankful for finding Dive Talk & all the real insight on this story and so many other. Much love guys!

Having listened to stories Thad Edd Sorensen told here on the channel or elsewhere I kinda recognized a big difference in storytelling.
Edd never glorified himself, Edd never talked somebody down, Edd wasn't constantly talking about emotions.
Edd has a very clinical way of telling a story, almost like an official report. He knows when to use terminology and when to describe something. He acknowledges that he has experience but he still admits that he has to analyze situations. He admits that situations escalate in ways he didn't expect. He knows how to tell his stories without bragging and without putting his actions into the spotlight.
It's this undertone that let's you know that he doesn't tell stories to make himself look like a hero but for the sake of telling a story and sharing experiences.

His buddy simply implemented that whole “every man for himself” rule probably somewhere around the second or third time the cowboy freaked out, randomly started inflating his bcd and rocketed himself off the line up to the ceiling to try to claw his way out through a random crack he found.

"We wouldn't be reacting to this video if there was common sense involved." Hahaha

The guy's "every man for himself" rule sounds like he is talking about being in the Death Zone on Mt Everest after 2pm, with an empty O2 tank. From my observation, divers tend to help each other.

I remember watching this before getting cave certified and it seemed very tense. I'm glad I watched you guys and revisited it, and your absolutely right, lots of gaps in the story. Great Vid!

$10 says he's the one that panicked, his partner stayed until he calmed down, they exited together, and his partner said "we're never diving together again."

I love how you guys ALWAYS mention the 5 rules of cave diving. I just know so many lives are saved just watching you guys. You’re appreciated.

i think he has a open water cert and is a adrenaline junky and went cave diving a couple of times without any idea what he was actually doing, like so many did before him. this time he went and panicked because he lacks basic training, then added random stuff to the story from pieces he heard from other incidents and movies.

remember cerrone always tries to give the impression of him being an extreme sports guy. he also talked about skydiving but most likely only did some tandems without having a cert either.

You hit the nail on the head. When I first watched him tell his story, I was in awe. After coming across this channel and watching alot of your videos, hearing him tell the story again was so cringey. You could tell the parts that might have been true, and the parts that he was making up as he went. I think he was the partner that lost his mind and panicked in the beginning.

I’ve been a diver for 20 years but never caving…I heard Cowboy’s story before I discovered Dive Talk and I was like “Holy crap” with cowboy’s story. Now after watching a lot of Dive talk I realize he was extremely careless and his so called “old dive partner” that he was pretty much trashing was in the right and it was Cowboy that was the danger.

Diving with this guy sounds like a death wish. He loses sight of me once and just dips out of the cave like “WELP, must’ve lost him!” 🤦🏻‍♂️
Great video as always guys!

*I know absolutely nothing about cave diving and I actually laughed out loud when it turned out his buddy got out by just following the line 😂*
