Henry Gagnon at the height of the Depression in 1932, lost his job as a loom fixer at the Beauknit Mills, then located in Cohoes. With only a fourth grade education he began to do odd jobs with painting and papering as his staple. In 1935, with his sons Rudy & Art he registered Henry Gagnon & Sons with the Albany County Clerk.

Jim, the youngest joined the company in 1947 and as such was apprenticed to the various sub-contractors hired by his father. In 1952, Jim served during the Korean Conflict with the Army Corp. of Combat Engineer’s, further honing his skills in the various construction trades, picking up and understanding of demolition, masonry and sandblasting.

On return from the service in 1954, he returned to work for his father and expanded the scope of work performed, adding building cleaning, kitchen and bath remodeling, as well as additions and dormers.

In the Eulogy to his father who passed in 1978, Art the oldest son had cards printed in tribute to our father that said “A common man who all trusted in his labors and asked for no more than his fair share for that labor.”
