Here's my mini thesis on this: What if... and hear me out... he suggested grouping up for the rest of he class because, being Annie's close friend, he knew exactly how she's gonna respond to that and he can then teach students how a good argument goes. Because an important part of law and being a lawyer is understanding it yourself, finding its strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best use of the rulebook in any given situation.
