Homebrew 6m antenna and the new Sotabeams tactical mini mast

This is NOT a how to video :-) I'm just videoing my attempt of building a wire antenna to take out to the hills soon with my new Sotabeams tactical mini.

I needed to try a new antenna for my Clansman 352 as the one that came with it may not be up for the job. So the aim was to build a half wave flower pot antenna to take with me on the next trip out, so I set to work with my average tools and average skill set.

I have a couple of trips planned this week (weather permitting) and I'm determined to get the illusive first contact on the VHF military radio.

For this trip I will use the Sotabeams tactical mini telescopic mast for the first time, so will reflect on how that performs.

I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My YouTube channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

Nice video, Good to see real radio and construction using things at hand even if you do have to adapt your plans a little !

It looks like a nice compact antenna. Good luck with the tests when you take it out. Cheers, 73

Good effort Carl. Getting out portable / mobile is very enjoyable. Using the FT891 to good effect here. Have made a 2m version of this antenna on my channel if you want to compare. 73

Most 6m FM repeaters use vertically polarized antennas. All 6m CW, SSB, and digital comms use horizontal beam antennas. So for testing, know which mode and band frequency range you are trying to communicate. And get the help of a fellow ham that can participate in your 6m testing. Cheers and 73.

How heavy is that radio? It looks really heavy! Good luck though. I think your dog likes the plants back there. Looks like he got up there trying to eat something in the pot... -73- W1KPS
