00:00 Introduction

00:34 The Prohibition High-and-Tight Hairstyle

It was very popular in the mid-1920s and with shows like Boardwalk Empire, it became very popular a few years ago. Maybe you've also watched Peaky Blinders and they all have very similar hairstyles. They are very short on the side with longer hair on the back and it gives you that rough edge that's kind of cool but at the same time very classic. It's a style that works for anything from fine to thick hair as long as it's reasonably straight and not too curly.

02:22 Pompadour

It's all about the top and how you comb it. Now James Dean had a curl and for that, you need some curl in your hair otherwise you can also go without and it still looks quite timeless and classic.

03:12 Flair

No, I'm not talking about the 1980s Gordon Gekko look that just looks dated today and almost like the cliche used-car salesman. Of course, if you have longer hair on top you can comb it back and have a little flair and not get quite an extreme Gordon Gekko look. If you want to wear the updated version of it, you want a square cut and if you tell your barber, he'll know what you mean. For this hairstyle, a mousse works best and you just work it in your hair and then comb it back. I suggest not to comb it back quite straight. You want a little wave so it looks more pleasing.

03:52 Undercut or we call it the Gent Gazette

It's the kind of a haircut I typically wear. I part it on one side and initially, I started parting it in front in the middle and I moved all the way out. Usually, my sides are cut shorter all the way up so I get that nice transition at the same time it grows out in a way that doesn't look terrible. Usually, I go get a haircut about every three to four weeks.

04:40 Bed Head

It's similar to a pompadour. It's shorter on the side, higher on top but it's just a little more disheveled which could look more relaxed and it's particularly popular with hipsters often combined with a beard. So, you want to tell your barber to keep it high on the sides and instead of combing it back you're pulling it forward and you dishevel it slightly with your hands. This is definitely a cut you don't want to be slicked back otherwise, it looks greasy. In terms of products, you want to stick with something with a matte finish and it can be like a grooming cream or a foaming cream, not a pomade, they're just too stiff. I suggest you start with damp hair and then use a blow dryer and your fingers to kind of dry it in shape and the only problem is strong winds. To counteract that, you can work with a bit of hairspray.

I am a gentleman of color, I have curly hair and I wear it in a Mohawk traditional style (my grandmother is full Native American, as well as her immediate family and before her) minus the short sides and I go for a half faded side, I get alot of complements on it and I learned how to do it perfectly myself, when i wear formal menswear it looks even more harmonious as I'm told, I think this style is a classic style with a modern touch for gentleman of color if you have longer hair and I think if you have short hair then a number 1 or 2 with short sides works for you

I solved the problem by clean shaving my head every morning... after all it's another timeless style ;)

Just a tip. Can you turn down the music in the intro and outro, so it doesn't blast me out of the chair every time i click on these video.
Or at least make it the tone of the video.
By the way you make great videos this was just a request and not me complaining.

Sven, your current hairstyle doesn’t work for you at all. It emphasizes the receding hairline and big ears. You’d look a lot more youthful and virile with more voluminous hair.

Perhaps ironically, you look best in the “pomade forehead zit” pic.

I'm a world war two reenactor, so I generally need to keep my hair in a 1940s German style. Hard taper all the way around, hard part, and long on top. I started doing it at first because I had to. But over time it really grew on me! Plus, if I'm not reenacting I'm able to let the sides grow out a bit.

The amounts of hair gel this man uses are UNHOLY. C'mon man, you should know better.

I used to go to a barber that actually learned classic cuts from a guy who was doing classic cuts in the 40s and 50s. Today you really only see hairstylists reconstruct cuts from old photos while using modern techniques.
For instance, I have rarely seen a pompadour combed correctly. 1. Comb from the part sideways from one ear toward the other ear. 2. Comb only a little from front portion of your hairline toward the back. Having hair combed in two directions is where the height (aka “pop”) comes from. It isn’t just the pomade or gel.
Also not all classic cuts have to have super short cut sides. Johnny Cash, Elvis, even the Don Draper character had super long hair on the sides. The old slang is “Fenders” vs “whitewalls”. If you have an oblong face (like my horse head) you should probably avoid cutting the sides short. Unless, of course that is a feature you’d like to highlight or exaggerate.

@Gentleman's Gazette: Tip from myself, I stopped using shampoo for my hair like one and a half year ago and i have to say my hair went from oily with hairloss in the first 2 weeks to perfect healthy hair now. i Only wash my hair with water and it works perfectly! Also my hair don't pick up so much dirt now then to the time where i was using shampoo.

As a pomade user I would suggest you to try some more maybe not as traditional and greasy pomades than before.
I use Lockharts Goon Grease on a daily basis and I could never go back to using gel.
The slickness and hold is great, it is easy to use and it is not as greasy as traditional pomades.
Pomade never made my pillow dirty or transfered to for example cloth.
My suggestions for easy to use products: (Waterbased->) Layrite Superhold, Schmiere Hart waterbased or Reuzel Blue and if you want to try an oil based product go for Goon Grease.
Your hairstyle will hold all day and you can always restyle it!
And gel also damages your hair!

A mohawk! I recommend starting with the got2b spiking glue then going to the hairspray to make it stay up

My wife, who was a hair stylist for many years (and still my stylist!) recommends Style Sexy Hair Hard Up as an alternative to the Got2B Glue. She's turned me on to many great hair products, so I don't doubt her suggestion!
