By the way, the sign in the video is saying that they only speak Japanese but that they aren’t going to serve foreigners at all because of it.

The original point still stands, when I went to Japan shopping for hotels for example the place I was at specifically said “We don’t take Chinese guests.”

There are signs that say “No vacancies” in English and Chinese, but in Japanese, they say “If you can read this, you can come in.”

Dang that was awesome. I'm half okinawan living in Brazil, my mom used to tell us she never ever experienced prejudice or something of the sort here...except from other "pure japanese" families in her neighbourhood 🤦🏻‍♂️

The moment you said that he's Dutch,
my first thought literally went to that company, and the fact that the dutch were one of the very few allowed to trade with them.

Surprisingly, they were allowed to trade with a lot of places around the world that usually refused foreign trading

Golden Kamuy touches a bit on the subject of racism against Ainu people.

I went to Japan and for one instance I was in the train sitting down with two empty seats on both sides, no one sat next to me. For an hour they all decided to stand than to sit next to me, my only solace was when an older lady got in the train and instantly sat next to me. I'm a brown skinned Mexican for reference as to why it possibly happened

Shinichiro Watanabe is a treasure for that reason. His blend of music genres in his series like Bebop, Champloo, and C&T, are reflective of his idea of a multicultural harmony.

I think Detective Conan also does a stellar job with xenophobia, being what the character Amuro dealt with, esp in childhood.

I think its very funny how he was escaping homophobia in the Netherlands when the Netherlands were specifically the first country to legalize gay marrige

My dad and I were talking about this. When you visit Japan as a tourist, they are probably some of the nicest people you’ll meet (at least to your face). Most will do whatever they can to make your stay feel wonderful, and if you are staying with a host family, they’ll do anything to make sure you are comfortable. But if you move there, you get to see the dark side of Japan.

Also, homosexuality I don’t think is widely accepted in Japan right now.

I love the irony of a gay character using the phrase "tight-assed".

Peak comedy.

Champloo does such great representations and commentary on the effects of zenophobia and colorism and its really disappointing that a lot of anime arent up to calling those things out

Run with the Wind also lightly touches on this.

I actually argue that Japan is more xenophobic than the US, but for some reason a lot of people disagree. My main argument is that in the US you can talk about xenophobia and debate it rather openly, but in Japan, the conversation is almost nonexistent because the people don’t fully understand what the “line” is. I think a few more decades of being open will get Japan in the right direction, but given their own history I imagine they will take a very long time to get to the openness that the US has. And the US isn’t even in a great place at the moment with, because we are still working through our own xenophobia and racism.

I remember watching this series and it helped shape how I wanted to treat and see people. Not by their differences in appearance but by their actions. I hope we can one day have a world where we can see each other by our merits and flaws and not by ethnicity.

The way people believe Japan is and the way Japan actually is is crazy.

People think it's in the future. Like it's far more advanced than any other country in the world but they still use practices that have been outlawed in most places since the 1800s.

Blue Eye Samurai is not an anime, but it definitely is about xenophobia and sexism in Japan in a historical setting

As a history student, I like how history is used to show some of its relevance today. And it's one of the main tasks of historians too

Although it’s not an anime, Blue Eye Samurai is another show that does a fantastic job with this, although that show is also just fantastic generally.
