I have looked for a solution this simple for so long. Well done good Sir! I like having my files sort properly and deal with many different regions and expected date formats in my work, so I prefer to have my system set to use the date format YYYY-MM-DD. This date format is NOT LIKED by the datevalue formula generally speaking. Your solution to nest a Text function within a Datevalue formula is FAR simpler than any solution I've ever seen for this.
My most sincere thanks!

For others who this doesn't work for, I think you're dealing with another aspect. Have a look at my other comment for some tips thatm might help.

By the way, this does seem to indicate to me that Excel's Datevalue function is biased to the U.S. standard unless I'm missing something.

Nope. Didn't solve the error. For non USA users, this is a bug. Being in Canada, i had to change language and date settings on the PC to English (USA) before any of the excel date functions would work. If you have excel and the settings window open at the same time you will see the value error disappear immediately after you toggle the setting.
