For anybody finding this for their rebuilds: The factory tensioners are prone to failure, and the only benefit is noise reduction. The LS2 LS3 style damper that is shown here is recommended by most.

Also... when buying an aftermarket chain and sprocket set there are usually options for +/- centerline distance. Cam center to Crank center. An accurate measurement of this distance will guarantee good fit.

Just found the OEM guide in the bottom of my oil pan. Ordered one of these style, but solid and white for added strength. The original LS motors didn't even have a cam guide, so yes that's fine. All it does is guide the chain away from curving in.

Bro that’s the 1/4 of the slop a LS chain normally has.lol. You’re good to go!!

Update to my previous comment... As a new-be to LS engines I, had to correct my self. "YES" they are meant to have slack in them which is the reason why some come fitted with tensioners. And, even though mine at 100k miles (chain/sprocket/tens) weren't at all showing much wear, I've had everything replaced anyway. It may be a bit late to suggest and not use the dampener. Instead, use (and I, have) GM pt no. ACDelco 12626407 tens/kit. This will (which dampeners won't) self adjust for wear and remove any potential chain whiplash... Cheers.

I decided to run with it, my brother is building a similar setup with the same slop. I opted to use the older style dampener rather than the new style tensioner that came with my motor.

Gen 4 motors usually have the tensioner because once the cam and lifters is in the right side tends to bind and click and left side has slack. This is because believe it or not, the 4x (1 and 3 bolt) sprockets have asymmetrical teeth (some teeth look like a wave to the right than a point) apparently this slack is fine.

I have the same issue on my L99 to LS3 conversion. I did the Katech Chain with LS2 Dampener, very hope someone who knows will chime in soon.

Got the same thing going on here, trusting its all good!! when you went to the 3 bolt cam swap did happen to notice i a groove in the #2 cam bearing? Mine did seam to have one because of the design of the vvt cam to feed oil to the actuator in front of the cam??? Went ahead and installed anyway so i guess time will tell, just curious if you noticed the same thing....

My understanding is that all timing chains for All Aluminum blocks are loose when cold so that when the block heats up and expands, the chain will tighten to just the right tension.

Honestly... I, wouldn't run this chain as it already looks like it's done some mileage. Years ago I've replaced a timing set on an old ford 5L and it was so tight, I could just slide the crank gear in. When first started it was very noisy for several minutes (or so) before it became totally quiet. So yeah, there shouldn't be (in my opinion) any slack. Can't hurt to try an aftermarket one eg. Rollmaster. I've just bought a car with L76 AFM engine few months ago and it runs great at 150k. It's a bit rattly 20-30s on cold start only, and it's well known that AFM lifters start playing up at this mileage. From what you've just showed us as an OEM part... I'm now even more Cheers.

was that a 4x 58 tooth or 4x 24 tooth or a 1x 24 tooth? Where was your cam sensor?

Just did a chain In my wifes '08 Tahoe 5.3, the tensioner slide broke and jacked the chain up of the crank gear enough for the chain to jump 3 teeth, engine ran like shit. New chain and tensioner installed. I WILL say, if the tensioner WAS NOT there, the new chain would have all sorts of slack, so Im going to say ITS NORMAL???
