Certain observations made by me for choosing optional.

1. Select Optional which will help in GS paper. Believe me or not it helps a hell lot and saves so much of time esp if you are selecting optional such as History, Economics, Polity, Geography etc. Offcourse interest has to be there.

2. Let me discuss the pros and cons of selecting optional for both Science (Engineering/General/Medical) and Humanities Subjects.

SCIENCE SUBJECTS:

Pros: 1) logical, meaning the answer aren't much of openion based but are of fact and principle based. This means chances of getting full marks for a particular answer is high (we all have experienced this in school days).

2) Didn't have to cite source, like that in Humanities Subjects. Meaning less content/books to cover (exception is medical science but still is lesser than Humanities). A theory is already there if it's been proved only.

3) If someone has Science background in Graduation and most importantly is in immense love with the subject choosen during Graduation then I would say definitely go with it.

4) It helps in other exams like GATE, ESE, IFS, State JE/AE designed esp for Engineers.

CONS:
1) Choosing Engineering as optional depends on certain attributes of one, and two of them are Logic and Problem solving skills. One has to be ready to solve complex Numericals and for which having a logical mind is basic requirement.

2) The major challenge/opportunity by choosing engineering optional is one has to compete with similar kinds of candidates. For Eg: If someone has choosen Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering as optional then the competition of him/her is going to be against people who are from that background only. It's not that they are competing against people from Humanities Background or even other Science Background for that matter. However this means that one is competing also with people those who have better attributes than them. For Eg: By choosing Engineering as optional one has to compete with IIT'ians, NIT'ians, Govt Eng college toppers or even ceratin engineering exam toppers who has already cracked exams like ESE (Engineering Services) and wish to attempt their luck in CSE too. Which means that one has to compete with creams of that particular subject. Now how does this effect I'm going to discuss in next point.

3) The major challenge of selecting Science as optional is understanding of subject. It does not depend much on answer writing (presentation/ choice of words/ Handwriting etc like in Humanities Subjects) but it depends more or so understanding the problems statement and solving Numericals. Most importantly since level of Optional subject is slightly higher than that of Graduation (approaching masters level) this means one has to be ready to prepare extra complex topics by themselves only. For example: In Mechanical Engineering one Studies about Trusses in 2-D only. And even in Highest level of exams in Engineering Domain such as ESE, GATE and ISRO etc they asks questions on 2-D Trusses only. But in CSE optional they asks questions related to 3-D trusses too (as it is in Masters Syllabus). So the verdict is again having interset, Passion, Logical mind etc.

4) It's a time consuming thing and esp for newbies (even though they are from that domain too) it's a big no to select those optionals as one can not link up GS subjects with optional at all. It's highly recommend that if someone is taking Science as optional then he/She must have given/Prepared for ATLEAST ONE GRADUATION LEVEL COMPETITIVE EXAM regarding that subject.
