the song is about death of cossack officer who was deadly wounded by a bullet in three days battle between three hundred cossacks and thousands of Tatars when cossacks held their ground. There is story that it was a friend of future famous ataman Matvei Platov, who married passed officer's fiance. The dying man is thinking about his fiance who will marry other man and forget about him, about his old mother who will remain lonely and that winds and storms will take away his hair and his dust, but he is all right with that (Любо, братцы, любо), although it is beautiful to live, he was happy to serve with friends and their ataman and to die with them.

Near the Kalalakh River (translated from Turkic - the Great Mud), the transport was attacked by the combined Nogai and Crimean Tatar hordes numbering ten thousand horsemen.
The Don Cossacks of the third rearguard regiment, without waiting for the squadrons of the Akhtyr hussars and dragoons, were the first to rush to the rescue of Platov and Larionov. 300 Cossacks with peaks attacked the Tatars and Nogais from the rear, which caused the enemy to panic. The army of Davlet Giray was dispersed. More than 500 people remained lying on the shore. The Cossacks lost 82 people and a third of the horses killed.
