The Wrestler Who Used Math to Promote a Match - Scott Steiner at Sacrifice

preview_player
Показать описание
Let's chat about Scott Steiner, who did some serious math and probability to calculate his odds of beating Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle at Sacrifice 2008, for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Steiner math is the best math! #steinermath

Do not take any of the calculations in this video seriously - neither mine nor Scott's.

Scott Steiner lost because Kaz replaced Kurt Angle. You see unlike Kurt, Kaz apparently didn't KNOW he couldn't beat Scott Steiner and therefore actually tried which completely threw off Steiner's calculations.

My favorite bit of this is that the numbers SPELL disaster. My dude's inventing numerical literature.

Kurt Angle KNEW he didn't have a chance. So, rather than get in the mix, he got injured

Never did I think I would ever see a reasonably serious maths video and Scott Steiner in the same place. We’ve entered a new realm of entertainment

The reason Scott lost is _because_ of that 216.666%. Hear me out. 100% chance means a guaranteed win, right? So if you took an _additional_ 100%, there would be two guaranteed outcomes. Plus another 16.666% chance, and that's a _third_ outcome (which is NOT guaranteed). However, even in a three-way match, it's still only _one fall_ to a finish. You can't double-win a match, or triple-win a match under the current rules. In fact if you continue to wrestle your opponent after the first pinfall, the referee can reverse the decision and disqualify you.

So if Scott went into the match with a 100% guaranteed victory, he'd still have 116.666% left over, and be forced to wrestle two more falls after the end of the match, which would have gotten him DQ'd. So he had to wrestle that first fall with only the 16.666% chance, which is pretty slim. But in that case, at least he could potentially bargain with the authority figures for a rematch, or to add two extra pinfalls to the match. If that happened, he'd be guaranteed 100% to win both of those extra pinfalls. Unfortunately, the replacement of Kurt with Kaz screwed up the whole formula.

Steiner understood Hairer's regularity structures at such a high level even before the theory was developed. Very impressive, most mathematicians can't do that let alone wrestlers.

Here in México there was a wrestler called "The mathematician", sadly he passed away just a few months algo.

Someday there will a question added in SAT on Steiner chances, but only true wrestling fans can answer this

This is hysterical. The timing of the edit after his explanation at 5:18 broke me.

Ah yes, Professor "Pump" Einsteiner, creator of the infamous 'Steiner Equation' that remains unsolved to this day. xD

The Genetic Freak as always, impressing with his knowledge of mathematics.

Steiner math is among my favorite wrestling memes.
