Subtraction for Kids | Mental Math Counting On Strategy | How to Subtract | Mental Math Strategy

--------

The method of using number lines for subtraction is better used with smaller numbers only because jumping with the bigger numbers will become distracting at some point. When it comes to this point of using number lines with subtraction, the kid should start with the smaller number on the number line and jump while counting until reaching the bigger one. This will give the child the chance to know the answer by counting the number of jumps he/she have made, the kid could also double check by jumping back while mentioning the numbers in reverse.

Even with addition, number lines should be also used with small numbers in order to make it simple for the child and if it comes to the bigger numbers then choosing other mental math strategies would be better, such as the method of reordering the numbers and partitioning them to make the addition easier.

Counting on strategy is helpful with the small numbers as we have just said, such as the difference between 18 and 16 for example, or the difference between 24 and 21; these could be easily calculated on the number line and make the whole idea behind subtraction much more easier for the child. There are different subtraction methods and techniques used but the kid will choose the most suitable one according to the numbers, whether they are big or small.

Along the journey of educating the child, parents should know that practicing is the most important part of learning something and that's why they should keep repeating the lesson they are teaching the child in order for them to practice and learn it. Parents should never worry because kids might take time, it always differ from one child to the other but they will eventually learn what they are receiving.

There are different vocabulary words used instead of subtraction that sometimes deliver the meaning to the child easier and let them know what they are supposed to do from the equation, these words include "taking away", "removing", "minus", etc. which are sometimes received by the child in a much easier way than the word "subtracting".

Kids should always keep the word "mental" in their heads and this is important because "mental" means that they will be counting in their minds as well in addition to doing that on the number line.

Using number lines for subtraction is important and kids should also understand that even though they are counting on, they are still taking away and they are still finding the difference and solving the subtraction problem. It is important to use the word "difference" and "finding the difference" with this mental math method. Again, using this strategy is useful when the two numbers of the equation are very close together and the counting on happens from the smaller number to the bigger number.
