Thank you so much to Cory for sitting down with me and sharing all of this fantastic Information about the creation of Hoodwinked 🙏 - This video honestly wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without this peak behind the curtain he gave me. Speaking of which:

Despite looking... like it does 👀 Hoodwinked surprisingly made roughly 14 times its budget at the box office

But what’s even more astonishing is the story behind how this film was made. With a modest budget of about $8 million, Hoodwinked became one of the first fully CGI films to be independently funded. Achieving this on shaky 2005 hardware was no small feat—it was so challenging that even the director, Cory Edwards, admitted the odds of pulling it off were almost laughably slim.

That’s why I sat down with Cory to delve into the incredible challenges they faced—not just the literal oceans they crossed to get it done, but also why the movie looks the way it does. We talked about how Harvey Weinstein became involved at the eleventh hour and the impact his involvement had on the final product. And, if you’re wondering about the future of Hoodwinked, Cory even shared a jaw-dropping secret during our conversation.

This is so freaking cool. I remember seeing this film in the theater without having any idea about the crazy production

People act like bad animation means it's bad overall. It isn't. Hoodwinked is a very fun and great movie. The world is wacky, charming, and real Looney Tunes. The animation does look a little wonky and some shots look pretty bad, but I'll argue that the story and how it's told makes it a wonderful movie.

I am proud to say that Cory and Todd Edwards are my cousins! I literally watched these two (and their sister Katie, who is also in the movie business today) grow up, and I can tell you that they were creating some kinds of films and entertainment ever since they were little kids. Of course, I own a copy of both Chillicothe and Hoodwinked, and I know that they are all three geniuses. We loved Hoodwinked when it was released, but I will admit that I had no idea of the backstory of its making until I watched your video. Hearing this story, I have to say that I believe this was divine intervention that helped them finish the project and have the success that they did, and which they rightly deserve. I also highly recommend their first film, Chillicothe, which made it to Sundance. Cory and Todd, I am not surprised, but my hat is off to both of you again after hearing your back story! I look forward to the next family reunion so we can all find out what new madness you are concocting!

This movie defined my childhood. How cool that you snagged an interview with the director!

Rewatched this today after about 10 years, this movie is lowkey beautiful for how old it is, the animation is so human, the eye rolls, the smirks, all the facial expressions are so personable to the characters! And what a great plot!! I genuinely think this movie is one of the best animated films!! Humor, mystery, suspense, and every joke you could think of!!

Hoodwinked is how my junior high school teacher taught literary devices. I still remember what an allusion is thanks to my teacher using the "Use the hood" scene as an explanation. I didn't know about how much effort it took to make this movie. It makes me appreciate it more, knowing that.

I love this movie! I don't think I paid attention to the poor animation quality when I first saw it cause I was so wrapped up in the story, characters, and music!

Also, this movie introduced me to Ben Folds (sings the song "Red is Blue") who is now one of my favorite artists.

Hoodwinked is one of those ideas you and your friends wound come up saying "wouldn't it be funny if that was made into a movie?" But someone actually did it.

"Wouldn't it be funny if they made a movie about red riding hood, but it was a murder mystery and we get to see everyone's testimony from their biased perspective?" Yes, yes it absolutely would be funny

This definitely left an impact on me as a kid. I DEFINITELY had that feeling of "this looks awful", but clearly it was different, telling a different kind of story I hadn't seen come out of disney and dreamworks, and was very surprised. Ended up being a bit of a cult classic between me and my brother, and still have some scenes glued in my head decades later.

Interesting story: when I was younger my brother had friends who would come over just to watch hoodwink. They were in high school! Love it to this day.🤩

Being a film director who is now on year six of my first feature, I relate a little too much. I feel very understood hearing their story. Had no idea any of this was going on when seeing it in the theater as a six-year-old.

I remember seeing this once (on DVD I think) and it was definitely better than it looked at first. And the more I've heard about its production, the more I realize this really was lightning in a bottle, with anything like it probably never to happen again.
