Baby snacks are often marketed as healthy and convenient alternatives to homemade food, making them appealing to busy parents. However, many of these products are highly processed, hyper-palatable, and can contain excessive amounts of sugar or salt, which can negatively impact a child’s developing taste preferences and long-term eating habits.

Concerns with Many Baby Snacks:
High in Sugar – Even organic or "natural" baby snacks can have fruit concentrates, syrups, or added sugars, which can contribute to early sugar cravings and potential metabolic issues later in life.
Excess Salt – Some savory snacks contain more sodium than recommended, which can strain immature kidneys and accustom babies to overly salty foods.
Hyper-Palatability – These snacks are often designed to be addictive, making whole foods like fruits and vegetables seem bland in comparison, leading to picky eating and a preference for processed foods.
Hidden Additives – Even "healthy" baby snacks may contain preservatives, artificial flavors, or emulsifiers that aren’t necessary in a balanced infant diet.
While occasional use is fine, relying too much on pre-packaged baby snacks can set the stage for unhealthy eating habits. Whenever possible, offering whole, minimally processed foods helps babies develop a preference for nutritious, natural flavors rather than processed ones.

It’s so easy to just hand a young child a piece of fruit such as a banana or an apple. My toddler loves slices of bell peppers as a snack.

I remember reading the ingredients on baby food and being floored. They are full of preservatives, salt, and have more added sugar than is called for. I just made my own.

My mother runs a daycare and makes all her foods from scratch because she thinks most of the commercial foods from scratch aren’t good enough. She also has a degree in nutrition too which has helped a lot.

So it’s nice to see this.

I've been feeding my son premade food and snacks, i have to admit. I've had postnatal depression and found it difficult to function or do anything at times. I'm now in a lot better place and trying to improve his diet. I'm fortunate since he seems to love veggies and fruits (apart from berries at the moment) quite naturally. He's always willing to try new things, so I hope I can get him on track to a healthy diet. Same for me, too. Lead by example and all that.

Thanks for the video, it's a good motivation.

Isn't it their job to look that over BEFORE it hits store shelves? For most children its already too late because these snacks have been sold for years.

We use processed foods, but our toddler isn't super impressed with them. He will cry if he doesn't get grapes the EXACT second he sees them, we have to hide the bananas so he only gets one a day, and he will fight you for your strawberries.

My eldest choked on a Heinz branded 'Biter Biscuit'! My baby is okay today, _because_ when it happened, there were three 1st responders (family members) sitting at the table, with her, at the exact moment! Triple check for cracks & don't leave babies unattended.

Real fruits and veggies are snacks. Your kids won't hate them if you start them on them from the start.

My kids love peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, carrots, strawberries, black berries, bananas, etc. Choice of drink is milk and water.
A picky eater is created, not born.

Once a kid has teeth they need to use them in order to develop their teeth properly, crooked teeth and cavities can result from underdeveloped roots and jaw bones.

Just watch them eat and know how to save them from choking, they can eat more then just mush if they have teeth

I saw this Facebook post that said my kids can drink gatorade, it's fine, I drank it when I was young. And then they showed the old glass gatorade bottle with its four ingredients. Then they showed the new plastic gatorade bottle from today's world where they listed the 17 ingredients. We are not eating the same foods that we used to. Even if they look the same, they are not the same.

This is exactly why I will in large part be making the baby food myself. It's so easy to pure fruits or veggies after pressure cooking them so you know exactly what is in it.

I’m so glad I finally have a term I can use to explain the kind of food that are most “safe” regarding my ARFID, hyperpalatable is a perfect description
I do wonder if anyone has any advice for adults struggling with only really eating hyper palatable foods
Most of my food intake is either raw fruits and veggies or super processed foods that are easy to make. I struggle with a few mental illnesses that are the biggest reason for this (as previously mentioned ARFID but I have a history of bulimia and anorexia, I have ADHD, OCD, PTSD, anxiety and depression which all also impact my eating habits)
Most people just tell me “try new things” but that doesn’t help when every new thing I try tastes disgusting and I either choke it down or physically can’t eat it without throwing up. I know I seem like a kid but I’m 20 years old and I wish I could eat better… I mean a lot of the time I have issues eating at all, if I don’t have safe foods I just don’t get hungry
Not to mention the state of the economy, , a lot of the time it just feels better to either go hungry so I don’t waste money on food I could not be able to eat or get the cheapest option that I know I’ll like but isn’t nutritional at all

I'm glad my kids like fruits and veggies yeah we live in the US but I don't give my kids tons of candy and processed foods and while being pregnant with both of them I mainly eat fruits and vegetables

The convenience and mess free factor of these is really appealing on the go. That being said, at home a handful of nuts, a hardboiled egg, a slice of cheese, and some fruit is easier than figuring out how to get a squeeze pouch out of your carpets 🤢

I make most of my babies food from scratch. I do have fruitpouches in stock in case we have to rush somewhere or are out unexpectedly.

It shocks me how smooth brained most parents seem to be. They'll believe any marketing jargon and trust medical advice given to them by a toxic mommy facebook group, over a doctor.
