What are Renegade Daleks?

During the Imperial-Renegade Dalek Civil War, two Dalek factions emerged who fought against each other for control of the Dalek Empire. The Renegade Daleks, once the original Dalek regime, fought against the Imperial Daleks that Davros had created to supplant them. But what is the in-universe history of the Renegade Dalek faction?

I both love and hate how after so long and with so much material we still have to say “some time during” or “probably after” when talking about the timeline of the Daleks lol

I Love The 2023 Renegade Dalek Figures & They Finally Got The Silver Iris At Last But No Grey Band On The Mid Section & No Grey Ball Joints Cause Renegade Dalek Props Had Some Differences

I said it before but my head canon is that the survivors of both faction put aside there hated of each other and joined together etc with the eventual goal of war with the time lords, meaning the doctors plan ultimately backfired on him and the time lords, time will tell it always does

Something I always liked about the renegade Dalek design was the matted grey design which made them look like they were actually made of a strong material because the glossy effect on previous designs occasionally made them look a bit flimsy and not very strong

at 3:07 i have a theory that the renegades wouldve thrown away the special weapons dalek due to it being impure after being doused with incredible doses of radiation every time it would shoot. their thing is purity, after all

Brilliant analysis. Remembrance of the Daleks is my favourite Doctor Who episode of all time and this summarises its importance in time and space perfectly.

I've been working on my own interpretation of the Dalek Timeline and Design Chronology.

For starters, I've decided that in my AU, We Are the Daleks and Patient Zero happened during the Paradigm.

Anyway, the surface of Skaro was burnt to a crisp, completely levelled by the Hand of Omega.

In the Pre-Dark Eyes Timeline, Davros was the supposed only survivor of the Shoreditch Incident. He conquered the Earth and established the New Skaro Empire, with new Dalek casings, resembling the Imperial design but with blue instead of gold. This faction would return to Skaro and rebuild.

In a new timeline caused by the death of Straxus, where Davros still had fled, the remaining Daleks of both Factions were forced by their dwindling numbers to reunify. The Reunified Empire merged the two designs together, creating Imperial Dalek Casings with Renegade Colors. Abandoned by Emperor Davros, they also pressed the Imperial Hexagon inward instead of outward, no longer recognizing Davros and by extension, his hexagon eyed casing, as their leader for his desertion.

This became the Early Restoration Empire. They returned to Skaro to rebuild, while one sector joined forces with the clone Falkus to retrieve Davros, ultimately delayed, though not stopped, by the Seventh Doctor.

In the Mid-Restoration Era, Dalek Casings evolved further. Distancing themselves from Davros further, the Empire overhaul their color coded hierarchy, taking inspiration from the Silver/Blue colors of the First Empire. It was during this time that the Daleks began to scheme again against the Time Lords, prompting the Genocide Machine and Etra Prime incidents.

In the Mid-Late Restoration, the Daleks added protective measures to their eyestalks, including new ident tags and change the hexagon to a simple rectangle. In their plans against the Time Lords they rescued the Time Controller. Not entirely trusting the TC, however, they put him in charge of the Nixyce VII Occupation as a trial period.

Ultimately, the Time Controller was exiled from the Empire, and a pair of Gold Supreme and Silver Commander oversaw his destruction. Behind the Emperor's back, the Gold Supreme began plans to create a loyal Time Strategist.

Only then did DALEKS! and Time Lord Victorious happen.

Returning to the Late Restoration, Dalek Prime attempted to overthrow the Restoration Emperor, but both were usurped by the Supreme Dalek and Time Strategist, who went on to found the God Empire and began the Time War.

The Master was tried on Skaro during the Early Restoration.

I don't believe there was a "winner" in the Imperial-Renegade Dalek Civil War. Like most civil wars, the fighting was so destructive, it caused the collapse of the Empire it spawned in. For a period of several centuries, the Daleks ceased being the major threat to the universe that they once had been, being even more threatened than they were during the Movellan Virus Incident. I also think it lead to things like those Death Squad Daleks, who exist to make sure rival factions can't pop up and to ensure the purity of the Dalek Race, lest another Dalek Civil War occur and collapse that Empire.

Thank you so much for this. Now to tell my group that Renegades are the GOAT

Ignoring the EU, I feel like "Remembrance" should have gone into greater detail of how Davros retook control of the Dalek Empire after being taken for trial. It feels like a giant missing piece of the puzzle that could have been solved with a few dramatic "This is how I took my true place as Emperor, Doctor!" lines.

I've always found it humorous how the base props for the renegades started as the Necros Daleks while the imperials were the new constructions.

Excellent video as always! But I should point out, those Nitro canisters weren't Ace's, as the Doctor Pointed out she wasn't carrying any!

I pray the story is revisited at some point in time.

I like to think that the Renegade and Imperial Daleks ended up having a ceasefire in order to wage war against the Timelords, though the Renegades are more influential after the civil war due to Davros no longer being emperor.

I think it was probably the Reneged Dalek who reclaimed Skaro and eventually became the time war era Daleks.

I do have one question though which is: What is your favorite Dalek casing colour? Because yes the bronze and gold looks good, but I feel like the gun metal grey of the classic Daleks looks better.

Two things I didn't like about the Renegades in Rememberance. Most of them had shiny eyes and they had a matt coloured casing. In Colin Baker and Peter Davidson's Dalek episodes they looks good as they had some shine to them, but that's just my opinion.

As for the SWD, that what I was thinking, I heard a few years ago that it was originally a Renegade unit. Can't remember where I heard it from. I think it's also stated on a Doctor Who Wiki page.
But it would be interesting to know how it went from a Renegade unit to Imperial.

And I never knew the Renegades has weapon jamming equiptment to disrupt the Imperials accuracy. I just thought it was something to do with the fact that the Renegades been veteran fighters they are more experienced in fighting then Imperials.

And if it wasn't for the Doctor, I think the Imperials would of won regardless. The Renegades are only a small force and with the Imperials, they knew the location of the Renegade base traped them. They could of also transmatted more units to pile on pressure on the Renegades even if they didn't have the SWD.
