When providers hold the encryption keys the messages are not truly secure. As mentioned, an entity (usually governments) can request the messages be decrypted with the provider's key.

Signal is the only app mentioned here where the encryption keys are only held by sender and receiver.

It's wild that in the year of our lord 2023, end to end encryption isn't a standard baked in feature on all communication platforms.
My messages are incredibly boring and I still want to make sure they never leak. Why? Because if you aggregated all the messages I ever sent, you would know all my financial stuff, medical stuff, job/hobbies/address, internet accounts, etc

That is basically begging for problems to arise in the future. You know who doesnt have time to deal with something like identity fraud? Me.

As of August 2022 FB has already set up Messenger for end to end encryption as a default. Look through your settings just in case but it should already be there.
