There really aren't games like this anymore, huh? Those games that leave a lingering feeling of unease, somberness, and just... The feeling of closing a book after weeks worth of reading, that completeness, yet emptiness, all mixed together in a tangled mess. Mad Father is truly one of the greats, and one of the few games that has such an open ended ending but it still feels in line with the story it's presented.
_Did_ Aya end up like her father in the end? Well, that isn't for us players to know, is it? It's up to us to choose what we believe.
Out of the four most prominent Horror RPGs, Mad Father is... Very in the middle. Ib's true ending is one of completeness, it's a happy ending if you don't care about Mary (though that's pretty much impossible, that poor girl) and it's all sunshine and rainbows, the two heroes are alive and well.
The Witches House is devastating, it's a bad end that you, the player, helped orchestrate. The only good ending for Viola is you giving up, and letting the house take you.
Misao's ending is equally devastating. It's painted as a good end, but, is it? Misao went through so much and died a horrific death. Her vengeful spirit alongside Sohta went on and killed everyone except you and Toma. All of Aki's classmates are dead. Her best friend is dead, killed in cold blood by the man she idolized. All that's left is Toma with survivors guilt and Aki, who's alone now. She's lost all respect for Toma and wants nothing to do with him, they're both alone. For good. There is no happy ending in Misao.

But, Mad Father? Bittersweet, and there's no cannonical 'ending.' Nothing is clear. All you're left with is whatever you want to believe.

Am I the only one who thought that her ending up like her father was kinda a good ending. Like father, like daughter felt like such a nice way to bring this story full circle.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the games themselves, I suppose, but I've always gotten a really strong feeling about something regarding all of these old RPG Maker horror games. This is really just me imagining things, of course, but there's a thought of mine that's prevailed over the years and the course of my interest in these games, and that is the idea that there is an entire world out there within their universe. A world that will never know what these characters went through and, for those that meet a grim ending, will likely never be aware of their deaths. Life goes on for everyone and everything, simply leaving their names and situations as footnotes in history.

In a way, they become our own little secrets. We know the bloody history that took place within the Drevis home. We know the truth about the witch. We know what happened that day at the art gallery. We know the tragic story of Misao. These are all just popular examples, of course, within a sea of games like these, and when you think of them all this way, they become even more bittersweet than, as I see it, they already are. They may be forgotten stories within their own world, but we know.

I'm kind of just rambling now, but... I don't know. I love these games so much, and they make me feel sentimental. When I start feeling that way, I also start overthinking things about them, haha. Old Doll especially does it for me. I guess that's why I left this comment here of all places.

I hope no one ever forgets these games. They're so special. :)
