Oh no... The rabbits have gotten to him, may the rebate save him

Dude needs to do a crossover with someone who does timber framing. Every time he shows a tool he owns but "literally never uses" it's for big carpentry stuff. He's clearly equipped for it.

Don't tell me I don't need a shoulder plane!

I use my shoulder plane all the time ! I use my rabbet plane as well. But there are times a shoulder plane can do little cleanup jobs that allow you to fit things tighter. Times I use my skew wooden rabbet planes to help with tennons. So I would have to say I have used and use all of them. Love your channel !

I have a number of old wooden traditional planes, from a jack to a rabbet. And a few steel specialist planes of the same kind.
The most wonderful thing I've found about them is that - in some jobs at least - they can solve a problem in less time than it takes to set up a modern machine.
And SO much more pleasure when you see those fine ribbon shavings...

I've been looking for a very specific kind of plane, but I don't know what it's called. What I need it to do is cut a U shaped groove in a long piece of wood a consistent distance from the edge at a consistent depth. Yeah I could set up a router to do the same thing, but I like the feel of hand tools.

I’d like a shoulder plane. I do a lot of tenon and lap joints using a circular saw and sometimes I cut them just a tiny bit narrow. Would really help dial in those joints.

Dang, this was a really good explanation of all of them! You could say he made it all sound... plane and simple? 🤣🤣🤣

“I literally never use mine “ … ~ 10 seconds earlier…shoulder plane used to explain, what it is and why you don’t need one! 😝

I am currently looking at designing a fillister/plow plane that can be 3d printed, but it is not as easy as you'd think
(yes, I've watched Rex's videos on making your own planes, it is still hard)

And if you can get a rabbet plane, it’s much better to get one with a skewed blade. They may cost a little more, but they are worth it!!

Surprisingly, I use my shoulder plane quite often. Never for a tenon shoulder.

Bah ha ha, “do the same thing…kind of do the same thing”, made me bust out laughing, thanks Rex, your vids are always so interesting and the comedic timing I love.

Interesting - I use a shoulder plane to clean up rabbets

Interesting. I use my shoulder plane frequently, and don't own a moving fillister. Nonetheless, nice video. Thanks for sharing.

I gotta ask. How many planes do you actually have squirreled away in that workshop of yours?
