I saw a belt drive on a Litespeed titanium hardtail my friend, Bill has in his collection . He converted it himself in 1996 using automotive parts and machined a cog for the rear wheel . The rear hub had a Sturmey Archer 7 speed planetary drive in it which had wide range and is lighter than the Pinion one in the video clip .

wasn't there something about belts being not that great in the dirt? at least for motorcycles, I remember them being less maintenance, but more affected by grime. wouldn't a chain be better for MTB?
