INVITED SPEAKER SESSION 2
(Day 1, 16.50-17.30)
Revisiting English Language Teaching through the ELF and ICC Paradigms
Prof. Dr. Luís Guerra
Since the mid-20th century, different descriptions and models of the international scope of English have been proposed, attempting to distinguish the groups of users of the language (Kachru, 1988), or the uses and users of international English (Modiano 1999a, 1999b). By highlighting the successful users and the international spread of the different contexts of language use, these models challenge the traditional view of the prevailing role of the native speaker. In addition, more recent approaches have endeavored to include the growing diversity of contexts of language use and users’ competence, along with the wide range of native and non-native varieties and cultures. Fundamentally, such variety of uses and users is due to the role of the English language as the world’s lingua franca. Besides acknowledging the global spread and influence of English, it is crucial to reexamine the pedagogy of English in the language classroom. Remarkably, the diversity of varieties and native and non-native cultures is clearly underrepresented in English language teaching (ELT) textbooks (Guerra et al., 2020; Siqueira and Matos, 2019; Takahashi, 2014), as they continue to portray native varieties and cultures (mainly the US and the UK), with few or no descriptions of other standard and non-standard varieties and cultures of native and non-native speakers all over the world, failing to provide students with instances of out-of-the-classroom intercultural communicative experiences. As a result, teachers need to produce or adapt their own materials with useful and practical examples of real English language use. Grounded on the complementary paradigms of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), this talk aims at examining current pedagogical trends in ELT at the same time providing suggestions of approaches which foster the development of learners’ intercultural communicative competence based on the contexts of uses of English as a lingua franca.
Keywords: English as a lingua franca; intercultural communicative competence; teaching materials; language varieties.
