great edit. i have read a while ago that the tomcat model A was also tagged as a "fleet defender", due to the fact that initially it was intended to defend the carrier within 150km range. But ultimately it took the corsair's place as interceptor and fighter.

My great-grandfather worked on Hellcats during the war. He was supposed to be stationed in Pearl Harbor but was given a different assignment at the last minute, he’s 96 and still tells that story to this day!

NGL, the TBF is my absolute favorite plane of all time. It had everything a heavy bomber had, just in a much small, uglier, but also cuter package. Love the Avenger. Best in the game, and apparently IRL since there are so many I’ve seen pictures of lined up at air shows. They must’ve been good at flying or just not dying.
