How to Train a Barn Cat

We have had some great success with training barn cats on our farm. In this video, I'll give my tips for how to train a barn cat, including how to train a kitten to be a barn cat. You'll also get to see our barn cats at work and hunting.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

The metal musik wasn't edited in. It just plays in the background when ever the cat is on a hunt.

Another good reason to regularly feed the cats is it makes them better hunters. This is because unlike wild cats they don't have to worry about how much energy they waste while hunting. They can use as much energy as they wish because they know they have a steady food source. This actually makes pet cats have the highest kill rate amoung all cat species.

My grandfather use to tame and raise feral kittens that were born in his hay loft. People would often drive by their property and drop off cats thinking the barn would provide a good home. Those cats would eventually have kittens. His taming methods were probably a little controversial, but effective. He would put a collar and leash on them then put them in the garage for shelter. Every day he would give them a saucer of milk and fresh cat food. He took time to nurture and socialize with them to make sure they were comfortable around humans. After many bites and scratches, they were tamed and well behaved. He then would find them a good home. He did this for many years for dozens of feral kittens.

One of them became my grandmother's favorite and despite my grandfather insisting none of the cats come inside he eventually relented and let Fluff in. After my grandmother passed away he took special care of Fluff. He was his constant companion and cherished member of the family.

A person isn't a cat person until he/she gets one! Then, miraculously, the person becomes a cat person. Cats have a way of changing your mind! They are sweet, friendly, and very entertaining to watch. Enjoy! Love from Texas

Be careful keeping collars on cats. Increases the risk of strangulation if they get it caught on something in a tight space they squeeze through

Keeping cats friendly makes it easier to track their health and take to the vet when needed. Kittens are so cuuute!!

I want to sincerely thank you: I needed a barn cat, rescued a feral kitten, 'mostly' followed your advice, and now we get along great; and I haven't seen another snake or mouse yet. Plus, we keep each other great company outside.

OMG that is awesome! Ok so I kinda goofed. They are not in a crate...they are in my shop!! The animal control officer told me to keep them penned up for two weeks in side the shop. I made them their own boxes filled with straw, a litter box and of course some food. Chewy who is grey and white is all over exploring the shop. Felix the black cat...yeah he is very skittish. Took me 45 minutes to find him tonight! I will have the video up tomorrow morning. Thank you for sharing this video! Great help!!!!

I'm so glad you take care of your barn cats. So many farmers don't care about them. They don't take them to the vet or even take an interest in their barn cats. But I can see that yours are loved, and you take such good care of all your animals. It's good to see :)

I kept mine confined for a month. Acquired them right after they were spayed and were kind of ferel. So I spent time in their cabin daily until they started allowing me to pet them.

It's great to see that there are two cats. Barn kitties should always have company!

I've got five house cats that I love because of their ADORABLE faces, but am also allergic to. Not quite as bad as you it seems, but still. When we get our land and start our farm, I would love for them to be at least part time barn cats. I highly doubt they would stay anywhere but the house though. They have us trained pretty well. Lol
