I enjoy all your reviews on YouTube. You're probably one of the most insightful critics Ive come across.

Laserdisc was always a format that I never knew about until James Rolfe talk about in his format videos because laserdisc was and is a cool way to release movies, shows, and anime because its like releasing a movie as a vinyl record with extras and high quality video and sound before DVDs was released and before DVD players was reasonable to buy. Nowadays, I don't really think about buying laserdiscs because Blu Ray is already doing my job as the movie format that I buy for movies and shows ( I do buy DVDs for shows that are old or new because of price of the season or set and occasionally movies if there's a extra that's missing or hasn't been giving a great or solid transfer on Blu Ray).

Always love these laser disk videos Ollie. I knew absolutely nothing about laser disk until I got turned on to your channel. Thanks as always for creating such high quality and educational content.

Nice video Oliver, always great to see further adventures of others in LD land.
On Superman, I'm pretty darn sure the US release has the 70mm theatrical audio. When properly decoded into matrix surround it has the opening mono to stereo score transition and directional effects throughout not at all present in any other mix. The Bluray 2.0 audio is stereo locked essentially and is identical to the 35mm Dolby mix which is flat in the same way when matrixed. Each mix was done separately one after the other and rather rushed hence the somewhat canned quality. The stereo surround 70mm mix was never released. You are right that the transfer is a bit dodgy but trust me it looks very similar to the earliest LPP print the studio has.
Thanks for the note on II's audio. I knew the 5.1 was from the 70mm six track but didn't realize there were any major mixing issues. There's another LD to find then.

I use to have LaserDisc back in the day. I had Moonwalker, Independence Day, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey and many more.

Well here's something I'd love to see, a retrospective on Wolf. God I love this movie, I've seen it so many times as a kid.

Even though it's not a good adaptation, I really like the 90s Jungle Book and have a lot of nostalgia for it. It was actually Sommers' second film, his first was Disney's "The Adventures of Huck Finn" starring a young Elijah Wood as the titular character.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a retrospective/review of The Last Boy Scout sometime.

The Criterion laser of Lawrence is nice, but I also have the DVD release on the late, lamented Superbit format which is also excellent

DEEP RISING! This calls for a commentary! Proper schlock indeed, but pure popcorn fun! I have the 3-Pack DVD of this with The Puppet Masters and The Minion (w/Dolph).

"It's done by ILM. They must've done it on their lunch break." Haha! Good line, my friend.

Also, if you get a chance, I'd love to hear your thoughts on NIXON once you've given it a proper spin. It's a different film from JFK in some very surprising ways, considering Oliver Stone's usual political disposition. Plus, Anthony Hopkins' performance is incredibly interesting, to say the least. Hope you enjoy it.... all 191 minutes of it!

And again, thanks for all your hard work in cobbling together all of these vids/podcasts/etc. I look forward to each and every one. Just watched your RAIDERS video, which was aces. Keep up the great work!

I've always enjoyed Laserdisc through my uncle's setup and collection. I think its golden age was during the mid to late 90s (correct me if I'm wrong), so the movies I'm familiar with on LD is things like Navy Seals, Under Siege, The Rock, Star Trek TNG etc. I loved many volumes of Tom & Jerry on LD but my fav of all, the pearl in my uncle's collection is his Star Wars Original Trilogy box set. I believe (again, correct me if I'm wrong, lol) that the LD box set is the best quality, untouched version... before George's 'remastered' fiddling. The only downside of LD, imo, is having to turn the bugger over half way through. the later players could read both sides of the disc without ejecting it, but you still gotta wait while the motor whirrs inside to switch sides while you are left watching a bright blue screen! Great vid, Oliver... I'm now gonna go look for the few movies I inherited, I think I got Batman Forever somewhere.

I've always wanted to get into LaserDisc, an underappreciated video format. Watched a LD copy of "Poltergeist" with a friend recently, and I was surprised that a fantastic making-of featurette was included. I didn't even know one existed. This extra has never been included in any other home video release, including Blu Ray. I wonder why?

Just wanted to say, as a fellow film enthusiast, I'm right there with you in embracing a slightly older format if the picture is better, or it is the only way to acquire said film, as well as using multiple players to achieve the best quality I can from the medium. For example, my 360 plays my DVDs in a practically perfect form, the color appears right, the detail great, and I'll straight up ignore my Blu-ray player for these specific DVD films because my 360 is the best way to watch them. I admit, it's a weird thing to be so particular about, but it is my "curse/blessing" in loving movies so much.
