Why Chaharbagh Avenue is Called the Heart of Isfahan!

Chaharbagh Avenue in Isfahan is one of the most famous historical streets in Iran and a remarkable legacy of the Safavid era. This beautiful and unique avenue, built by the order of Shah Abbas I, symbolizes the grandeur and sophistication of urban planning in Iran.

Chaharbagh stretches approximately 6 kilometers and is divided into three sections: Chaharbagh Abbasi, Chaharbagh Pa’in (Lower Chaharbagh), and Chaharbagh Bala (Upper Chaharbagh).

The avenue is a blend of street and garden, adorned with rows of shady trees, streams, and small fountains, adding to the city’s beauty. Its design is inspired by the concept of Persian gardens and the idea of “Paradise Garden.” Chaharbagh is famously known as the "Lovers’ Avenue."

Chaharbagh remains one of Isfahan’s bustling streets, serving as both a tourist attraction and a shopping hub. However, over time, some of its traditional elements, such as the streams and gardens, have faced changes or destruction. Nonetheless, restoration and preservation projects are underway to safeguard this valuable heritage.

Shah Abbas often chose Chaharbagh as a place to meet with ordinary people. It stands as one of the earliest examples of modern street construction in Iran.
