When ever you loose suction, most times it's because you didn't let it prime all the way, make sure you have enough water in the canister before plugging it in.Also check your hoses to make sure there's no kinks or leaks. I used hobs for many years and I finally purchased a Hydor canister filter and I love it. Crystal clear aquarium and my plants & fish are striving in it. What I like about this filter is that you clean it every 2 months. Enjoy your new filter!

Hydor Professional 600 Sicce Whale 500, Eheim Professional 600 and ADA Super Jet ES1200 or bigger (ES2400) for a 50+ gallon tank :P I wouldn't get anything else. Adjustable flow, with a ton of space for media, and bigger the better is true... You could even use these on a 20G tank and you have a huge water reserve for healthier environment and more media. After the ADA, Hydor is my favorite, then Sicce... Sicce is a bit better quality, but has a few issues. (not in functionality, just size and cleaning etc. The Eheim has no bypass even compared to the others, but has some noise and has cheap parts... Still not bad. The only 2 things I don't like in the Hydor are VERY slight and minor issues... VERY sharp edges and I cut myself on them a few times, and a small amount of water bypass. Obviously for my nano shrimp tanks I have small filters like ADA super Jet ES150 with a custom valve and Hydor Professional 150.

I looking to get one of these for a planted tank that needs a lot of flow. Would you recommend this filter? How is running?

I also love my light setups... Although they cost an arm and leg XD I am testing LEDs now. The Kessil amazonias and Kessil A360, Ecoxotic E-Series... Wouldn't get ANY other LEDs for deeper tanks as of right now... I personally got these even for my shallow tanks...Had a Seastar with 5K plus 14K, but I hate the color tone XD. And the 5K died on me. Other than that it is a really nice one. These have really high par rating. I still trust my T5s the most. I only use D-D Giesemann Powerchrome 36 Inch 39W Aquaflora T5HO Fluorescent Bulb and D-D Giesemann Powerchrome 36 Inch 39W Midday T5HO Fluorescent Bulbs. The best of the best :P.
Another thing I use in all my tanks is Eheim Skim 350s and ADA skimmers with custom shrimp guard. HELPS A LOT! Also got a USB extension from Logitech and got an arctic breeze USB fan to aerate and cool my tanks if needed. For media these are my favorites: Seachem Purigen, Seachem Phosguard, Big pore and small pore carbon both in the canister (Acurel LLC and Aquatop brands) Carbonated filters, some zeolite, For biological: Biohome Mini Ultra, Biohome Ultimate and Fluval brand... The CO2 setups and fertilizers are a whole different story I won't go into. For substrate I like Seachem flourite series and ADA series. Both serve a purpose. Flourite is more stable especially if you have loaches and catfish XD

I love this canister! my waters never been so clear haha I was having a problem awhile age but I found out it was because the air stone was to close to the filter haha
