For years people have been asking about HDR High Dynamic Range on Linux and the answer hasn't been that great but soon things will begin changing on Wayland but not so much elsewhere

As far as I'm aware, true HDR screens are still crazy expensive, so I don't really care about it yet, but it's still good to see projects getting out in front of it before the price point approaches something that average consumers will consider.

I really can't wait for this. HDR is one of the things that keeps me tethered to Windows. HDR is one of those things you never knew you were missing until you actually experience it properly (these shitty HDR400 and even most of the HDR600 screens don't count). I use an Asus PG27UQ monitor as my main monitor, and some games in HDR are just utterly breathtaking. Sure not every game that supports HDR really benefits from it, but the few that do are really worth it. It also is kinda essential if I ever want to move my HTPC (can't install LiibreELEC since I also play games on it, so I kind of need at least Steam for that) to Linux, as I do have quite a bit of HDR media.

I liked stereoscopic 3D because it pushed for native 120Hz output and not for the feature itself. I have similar feelings with HDR: deep color support - yes please! Simulation of shining bright light into your face - No thanks!

I can't even contemplate having the finances to go HDR anytime soon as worthwhile, "proper" HDR screens are in the £800-1000+ range and even then, there are still issues which make spending that much money a bit galling (unless happy with 60hz).
Another year or two and the displays should be worth getting (assuming one has sufficient disposable income), so many *nix is timing it well.

Good to hear, as of right now the only reason I use windows 11 is HDR and autoHDR
While I know we're still only now maybe getting HDR, I do think we also need to see some sort of autoHDR in the future as well as 99% of linux apps don't support HDR and probably never will

I took HDR for granted in Windows 11. It was very inconsistent, but at least it kinda worked, even if I had to use Edge for HDR YouTube videos. Either way you need a pretty good HDR display for it to be even remotely worth using.

I have an "HDR" compatible monitor, but, well... It's only that, compatible. It **can** accept an HDR signal but the results are worse than in SDR. It has a really high color accuracy in SDR though so I will gladly take that over whatever the fuck is happening in "HDR".
It's nice that there is work being done. For movie-watching and stuff like media PCs, this will be awesome.

Funny… just got to the staring at light bulb warning/disclaimer and a YouTube notification on treating headaches popped up

Just by reading the comments I am tempted to go back to Windows, HDR is absolutely needed for Gaming and using Linux based platforms, HTPCs and the like. If not it's Nvidia shields and Windows for gaming. Linux must be ready to support whatever gimmick is out there or in terms of HDR content it's sheer beauty. It must compete with Windows otherwise it will be seen as outdated. However if HDR does come it will be due to the efforts of System76 since they have a vested interest, all others are like the comments below and above. I would definitely migrate over to PopOS from Fedora even if the code is migrated upstream.

This is really relevant right now; new monitor for HDR gaming in a few days, setting up and using Windows again for gaming seems way too drastic a a decision..

Your hitting the sweetspot for me on content lately. Have just been checking out if I should invest in new screens and came to the conclusion that HDR isn't really supported for either wayland or X. I'll save some cash for the time being and wait and see if it will be better implemented :)

I love watching wayland videos even though I understand almost nothing about it

I just noticed my monitor has HDR a few weeks ago, and my mild research didn't really say whether Linux would support it or not. Your timing is impeccable as always. Thank you Brodie

But is nvidia comming to a Wayland Desktop soon?

Android supports HDR. Android is a Linux distro. Android is open source. We can make it happen.

I’ve heard about HDR for years, and still haven’t bothered to figure out what it is

Then there is me, who used Windows from 1998 till 2019 on a non HDR monitor.
I then got sick of Windows 10 and moved everything to Linux, about one month after buying a 4K HDR monitor...

In other words, X11 is like spaghetti code . It could support it if somebody could modify the code to do so but instead they want to start over with wayland because it would be easier to just start over.

I think wayland us cool, but I think it be great if X11 was still suported. I guess it really does not matter, I can install the code and learn from it I guess.

A native wayland themeable login manager would be cool to add next. Idk why but to me a login manager adds a lot of polish.
