Kizlyar Supreme Bastardo Field Review

Kizlyar Supreme Bastardo Field Review. here i take out my Kizlyar Supreme Bastardo Bowie knife featuring lovely milled root walnut scales and a 420HC blade hardened to HRC57. yes, that's right HRC 57! This is the first knife I own in 420HC. I am now a believer that 420HC can indeed be heat treated effectively to produce an excellent edge for field work. Let the tests here dispel any myths about 420HC. NOW don't any one say this is not the super steel or it's this that and the other of course it isn't a "super steel". This is a budget stainless which when correctly heat treated and tempered can obviously produce a good edge for some serious outdoor work. If you would like to read more about 420HC then please see my latest blog about this steel and also the Bastardo knife.

Dirty solid pine, dirty solid birch, dirty solid oak, pumpkins, potatoes and pig meat on HDPE boards; NO problems for the edge. To be honest with Kizlyar Supreme's track record (as far as I'm concerned and I own many of their line-over the years) of excellent mastery of heat treating and tempering, this really came as no surprise to me but seriously I couldn't fault it. The edge was just as damn sharp as it was when i took it out of the box LOL!

The Kizlyar Supreme Bastardo is one big field knife that you can also prep your camp meals with plus more. Totally recommend it, maybe it's right for you.
Lifetime warranty-that speaks for the confidence of the manufacturer (IMHO-like for any manufacturer who offers a life time warranty).

Kizlyar made a great job heat treating that 420HC... very impressive!
Thanks for sharing...

Don't worry about the guy's who tell negative things about 420HC or 440C. Most of them carry a small folder for 400 bucks around all day to cut paper and Cigars.
These people have no clue about a tool to use hard in tough weather!
There is a reason why a lot of excellent companies and producer all around this planet are still using these steels for great knives! If the treatment of the steel is done properly you can use them for the rest of your life.
Nice review.

When I started looking into knives, a few months ago, I also joined the hype, trying to search for the perfect steel. Those times are behind me now. I mean, a knife is defined not only by steel type, but also the heat treatment applied on that steel and the edge geometry of the blade. This combination is what matters in the end. You don't need the toughest steel on the planet to do your thing with it, you need one that is tough enough for your use case, the same with hardness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, etc. Most of the knives from good knife makers will last you a life time even if they're made out of "crappy" steels like 420HC, 440C or AUS8. Ignore the steel snobs, you can a get a very good blade in these "shitty" steels if the HT is spot on and the edge geometry is suited to your activity. Most of the super steels require a lot more effort (physical and financial) in sharpening them. For me, this is not worthed even if I can afford buying them. A knife is a simple tool, is not a laser gun. There's nothing fancy about it. Just use the damn thing, take care of it and it will serve you well for years and years to come.

This is so awesome, that someone accidentally clicked the thumbs down by mistake.
This is what we call a Wilderness Knife 🗡
Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲

Missed the chance of giving us your best Crocodile Dundee impression while holding up the knife.

Great review.

420HC is used extensively by Buck, and it performs quite well.

It looks like Kizlyar Supreme got the edge geometry and heat treatment right.

I have two of their knives. Both are CityHunters. One is AUS8, the other is PGK. The AUS8 does fine, and is a breeze to sharpen. The PGK has fantastic edge retention, but isn't nearly as hard to tune up as D2.

Just seen this blade for sale on Knife Center and definitely interested. Seems like a great bargain for what they are given you. Version I want is in sleipner steel though for like $167 American. Thanks for the video sir!!

Nice review! Hey if you ever get your hands on a Kizlyar Forester please do a comparison vid to the pioneer. They look similar but I would like to know which has the bigger more comfy handle. A side by side comparison would be great. Thanks!

I bought the Zorg D2 under your recommendation. 2 years gone by and I haven’t sharpened it once. That D2 while not as sharp out the box, just does not need the same amount of upkeep.
I find Kizlar makes a knife you won’t need a replacement of.

You need our own outdoor survival bushcraft class.

Hey Francis, between this Bastardo in 420HC and the Jungle Combat in N690 from Fox, which one would you recommend for an all around do it all survival knife? Both seem pretty good to me, but I guess that the N690 from Fox would fare a bit better and the blade geometry from the JC looks sturdier.

It’s a good looking knife but looks like a small machete. You can find Chinese made bowie style knives with stainless steel online for under $40 USD. If you want a chopping and batoning knife than look at TOPS knives or Busse knives.

At 6:50 you say you don’t recommend the knive for batoning. Are you talking about this specific knive or in general? I want to purchase the sleipner version of this and i am trying to search for reviews but most of them are in russian, so kudos to you that brought to us a review in english! 😁

It's kind of a golden age for Russian knives. I have several now. All are well finished, fine performing knives at reasonable prices. Kizlyar and Kizlyar Supreme are the only ones I currently have experience with, but there are others I'm interested in trying.
