Small island developing states (SIDS) are disproportionately affected by plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, due to their geographical circumstances, narrow resource base, and unique vulnerabilities to environmental challenges. To compound the issue, the universal and transboundary nature of the global plastics issue, overwhelm SIDS and their capacities to respond to this growing threat. Moreover, as stewards of the oceans and seas, SIDS share a close relationship with the marine environment, and experience the impacts of plastic pollution therein more devastatingly. This installment of SIDS Talk Plastics seeks to highlight the key findings of research conducted by academia and technical experts from small island states who can best represent the relevant scientific, social and economic dimensions of this issue within the context of SIDS.
