I am a maintenance worker for the local municipality, so this makes me feel important. I wish my paycheck made me feel important.

Daniel has once quoted an Indonesian indigenous wisdom along the lines of: If it doesn't add to the beauty of life it shouldn't exist and the Art Museum being a sign of a dead culture because they have delegated art to a place, when there shouldn't be anything that is not art, there shouldn't be anything except art.
When traveling in East Asia or Africa, one can thankfully still witness vernacular architecture, houses of adobe, roofs made from banana leaves. There architecture is more of a verb because it requires constant maintenance and care, the building is (bio)dynamic, more of a process then a concrete reality. That alone changes the approach to life. Also everybody following this tradition gets to have the joy building their own house (community coming together around it ofc.) and learn everything associated with that. The barrier to entry is so much lower and I can be abandoned easily, not taking so much agency because of the huge commitment a house became in western society. A Lot to be learned from that. Its more about the process then getting there.

History doesn't need to work that way. We can take control of the narratives

This reminds me of Vishnu, the Hindu God in the Vedas. He's part of a trilogy of God's, but he is known as the "Preserver." He's very much worshipped as a diety for "householders" and people in the middle stages of life. However, the main diety of the West was an unmarried, martyr with a savior message, not necessarily to preserve and sustain. Perhaps the answers are in the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.

The existence of the universe says nothing about the existence of God. Instead, it is the existence of consciousness—our consciousness capable of not only perceiving the universe but also of reflecting on what it means and the meaning of its own existence—that points to a transcendent meaning and origin to the universe.

This ability of consciousness to perceive itself and its surroundings and to form judgments about it all is tangible proof of a dimension beyond the merely physical, indicating that there is more to reality than the universe we observe. Thus, consciousness itself testifies to a greater, divine consciousness behind all that exists.

Schmachtenberger talks about "maintaining" things but offers his followers end-times prophesies and ideas for revolutionary change.

Thinking about it, a "service" economy is more ecological than a manufacturing economy. Also like Sagan said more or less, we are the Universe contemplating itself!

While I loved that video and the talk, there still his takes on a few things:

1.optimism I disagree on, as optimism IMO for the individual is so important and powerful. Yes there are some problems with collective optimism applied immaturely like USSR and CCP whilst in denial of their own dictatorship and autocracy, but the will to power, having hope, faith, and optimism of an outlook tends to objectively be the best factor in surviving a dark night of the souls or the valley of darkness events. Even atheists tend to pray to someone or something in war dithces when faced with death. Don't underestimate optimism. IDC about naive techno optimism, I'd rather the mistake be naive optimism than naive materialism and naive realism. A lot of darkness is created with naive realism and naive pessimism.

2. colonialism there. My reasoning is based on my understanding of the modal Spiral Dynamics stages of development(Don Beck). A modal about the evolution of human values throughout culture, which is in fact the most accurate modal we have to date about the development of value systems in societies and cultures worldwide. In any point in history the color coding system and the descriptions of each stage of development matches up to what that civilization is in terms of values in that collective. For example for Mongolia empire in the Spiral Dynamics modal, SD, it would be labeled mostly as stage blue to stage red in values, stage red in values due to their pursuit of domination and conquest of lands, of other peoples, of gaining more slaves, of any material gains of power, of showboating, and several more stage red values, and also that empire is partly stage blue in values, which most imperial empires and early colonial empires, and even most young nations and countries that bind together under one type of nationalism exhibit strong stage blue values.

3. Christendom, especially the Christian kingdom. Yes this maybe my bias coming into here but keep with me, because in history what else is the alternative? Caliphate Islam? Religion then was spreading, namely not just Christianity but also Islam, and of course different strands and sects and denominations within each religion was emerging. And this is precisly such because those collectives which are staunch stage blue of nationalism/patriotism will want to unify the world under one banner, one ideology, one nation, one version of their god, one music, one anthem. It's a unification process and impulse in those collectives to try and gather and unify under one rulership. As much flake as for example Great Britain gets for ruling a third of the world, for it's colonial expansion, what most people don't understand is how anti slavery GB really is and even was since William the Conqueror's time to now. Due to him outlawing slavery, and due to early adoptions of Christianity and yes Protestantism, due to those Christian values the country was a pretty strong and healthy stage blue empire, and in fact perhaps the ONLY empire and nation to be so aggressively against slavery that it was fundamentally against caliphate Islam and the normalization of the slave trade in the middle east region, and even in the African continent that was practiced there by caliphate Islamists. So in essence even if the winners shape history, and there may be white washing to some degree, what isn't misinformation is how anti slavery GB was and how it fought hard, the ONLY empire/country to do so against slavery, until the USA caught up majority of their history was against slavery. As much as Daniel may hate colonialism and it's impacts on native tribes and indigenous pops, under caliphate Islam it would be FAR WORSE!

Nate, I know you are not a believer. And it is still a mystery to me how you can make logical sense of differentiating between good and evil, between being or doing good vs doing evil..., while remaining basically an advanced materialist... I am a Muslim, and according to our religion Man has a clear mission of being a steward or a caretaker of the Earth and of everything that lives on it, while maintaining justice amongst humans and giving rights of all the living and non-living things where they due. We call it being a Khalifa.
Whole miracle of existence, whole experience of existence, as your guest is describing is the direct indication towards the One who created everything with great wisdom and love
