This is a review of the OO Gauge Heljan Class 52 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive in the BR Green livery named as "Western Emperor". The model is DCC ready and seems to capture the shape of the prototype reasonably well but the only drawback on this model is that the brake rods are VERY delicate to fit to the trucks. The model is very smooth for running and performance so it could handle a rake of Mk1's easily without slipping. Packaging is very generous as well from Heljan.

Overall Rating: 10/10

Technical Information:
Class: 52
Built: British Rail 1961−1964
Engine: Maybach 1350 hp × 2 (total of 2700 hp)
Transmission: Hydraulic
Wheel Arrangement: C-C
Design Speed: 90 m.p.h.
(Thanks to "Willowfs4472" for the information on the prototype)

See, this is one particular western I would get. I'm an air cadet at 1036 squadron, so the number would make quite a beast addition. Another brilliant review chief.

I have to say, that is a very nice model, the detailing is quite impressive. Although I'm building a modern route I might buy one of these just for the occasional historic railtour.

Certainly according to every website I've ever read, you were right. I've never seen it metioned anywhere about being powered by Voith engines - it only had a Voith transmission, coupled to 2 Maybach lumps...

The Western were powered by twin Maybach Power Units, with Voith Tranmissions. They have never made Power units as far as I am aware.

I think it looks fine without the brake parts anyway but very nice looking diesel

Two Maybach MD655 units coupled to Voith 3 speed hydraulic transmission.

Excellent review! Why don't you add a buffer stop at the end of your test track? I was worried your brand new loco might fly off the table! lol
