Some clarifications. Kindly read those before turning the comment section into a warzone :)

‘’But I thought Michael Phelps had the most gold medals?’’

I mentioned gold medals in an individual event, not a combined event.

‘’Are you saying that he was a better wrestler than Karelin?!’’

No, I said he has surpassed Karelin in terms of Olympic medals, not necessarily that he’s a better wrestler. I don’t know how to determine that anyway.

''Are you saying that Lopez's success is all due to genetics?! Are you disregarding his hard work?

Not at all, I am not presenting it as an either-or matter. I am mentioning how he is genetically blessed in terms of athleticism while praising his extraordinary work ethic.

‘’But wait! Are you saying that heavyweight combat sports are easier?!’’

Far from it. I am saying that the prominence of certain athletic attributes is different in the heaviest weight classes when compared to the lighter weight classes due to dramatic differences in the morphology and body mass of the athletes. The prominance of speed and agility are higher in the latter than the former, making it particularly difficult for older athletes to compete.

Greco in general is much more relying on pure strength & endurance than any other martial arts. Speed is important but not as your strength. I remember in Soviet Union when I was a boy attending to my greco club, coaches were saying if you don't have natural strength go and play football instead of wasting your time in greco. Ahaha. It was just so simple. And the importance of your natural ability to increase your power and strength is becoming crucial when you gaining weight and slowly moving to heavyweight category. Heavyweight division is elite, the are extremely powerful, especially in greco.

You should take a look at Valentin Jordanov he won gold in wrestling at 1996 Olympics in the 52 kg weight class he was 36-37 years old and but moved incredible fast for his age

You have also less concurrence in heavy weight classes (vs medium eg) so it could favour a longer duration. Btw it doesn't diminish the great performance of this wrestler!
