There have been many incredibly wealthy and powerful empires in history. The Roman Empire had an extremely powerful army. Soldiers were given the opportunity to gain riches by joining a Roman Legion. Tax revenue during the Principate typically ranged from 800 to 1,000 million sesterces, of which about 50% to 80% was spent on the military. Soldiers in the early Mongol Empire lived simple nomadic lives. The wealth of the Mongol Empire stemmed from land and livestock. At the time of Genghis Khan’s death, the mongol empire was worth more than $100 trillion in today’s dollars, and historians believe the Empire had as much as 200 million head of cattle. In later years of the Mongol Empire many treasures pillaged by Mongols were used to improve living conditions in conquered realms. The British Empire’s Royal Navy ws so powerful that it controlled a vast majority of the world’s trade routes from 1815 to 1914. By 1870, the British Empire controlled 24.28% of the World’s GDP and in 1913 it controlled 36.54% of the world’s GDP. It remained the world’s foremost superpower until WWI. During WWII, the United States became the world’s most dominant superpower. Adjusted for inflation, the US military spent $4.1 trillion fighting Axis forces in the Pacific and Europe during World War II. The US has spent about $1.4 trillion to date on the War in Afghanistan and the US Department of Defense’s annual budget is about $721.5 billion every year and growing.
