My senior math capstone course at the University of Oklahoma was Mathematical Modeling in the Life Sciences. That was the class that introduced me to the end of my formal math education, the Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Model. My capstone project was to use the LVPP model in urban ecology to predict population sizes of cities as people move from urban areas to sub-urban areas (WHITE FLIGHT) and then back to urban areas (GENTRIFICATION). Ignoring binary cities (D/FW or Minneapolis/St. Paul) the model was scarily accurate, especially in predicting 'ghost towns' like Deadwood or Tombstone. The bulk of the work had already been done at the University of Kansas but I came up just as Chaos Theory exploded so my part was to add sensitivity analysis. I began to think that math could be used to model ANYTHING and felt myself slipping into an obsession like the guy in the movie Pi. That was the last formal math class I ever took. From then on, it's all been recreational math, studying by myself (I once created an algebra for mixing paint colors and tried to create an algebra for music theory. Still working on it!)

I just love how there is calculus for all kinds of subject, it just really shows how diverse it can be. Calculus is truly of beauty.

If you want to cover more biology books with lots of math maybe check out Foundations of Cellular Neurophysiology by Johnston. As a physics major someone told me about the book and it peaked my interest. I was amazed how much advanced math and physics I learned was in there.

Biochem Eng student here. I just ended the first chapter moments ago, i totally recommend it. It has a good didact method, it´s entreataining and it has a lot of applications for biological/ chemical sciences.

I would totally recomend it. I was looking for a book to reinforce my knowledge of calculus (I´m more of a physics/chemistry/biochem guy, I´m bad at pure maths), I was alredy looking foward to james stewart ´s calculus but then I saw this video and it convinced me way more than the original.

Salutations from Yucatán México. I love your videos, they inspire and motivate me

Do you have any books/plans to discuss books on Operations Research or Management Science? I think that might be very intriguing to folks not familiar with that field of applied mathematics!

Thomas & Finney was used in an honors calculus course which I audited. Several students in the front of the class said that they wanted to be doctors.

Hi. First i want to thank you for this beautiful channel. I love math & science and the scientific society.
Second, i wish you could make a video about some british (uk) books of mathematics for enginnering and science..
The most known books are:
1. K.A Stroud engineering mathematics
2. Anthony Croft mathematics for engineer
3. Riley and Hobson mathematical Methods for physics and engineering
4. Glyn James Modern engineering mathematics

I'm really interested in your comments of these books and how deep or light if we could say their material. because they are different from the US books style and presentation and it seems to be very easy and simple till you ask yourself a question: is that really math or a something else
Thank you

Can I use this as my main Calculus book for self-learning?
I'm a medical student and just started learning calculus but now I'm considering switching to this because that looks like a lot of fun but I don't know if it's sufficient on its own for things like physics and physical chemistry later.

Hello Sir, I get a little of headache on math, the problem is the expense of scratch paper is becoming an obvious part. What is your solution?

Hey math sorcerer! I was wondering if you can make a video giving your opinion about khan academy! Do you think it is a good substitute for a book or even a class? If not are they worth the time investment?

Ah, yes I found that gem in the wild. I was was like, “BioCalculus?”
Sounded like a monster movie.

your addiction to smelling books is real 🙃. It might have been worth noticing that the first author of the book is J. Stewart, who also wrote (arguably?) the most popular textbook on the subject... Perhaps commenting a bit on the authors of the books you review would add some color!

Roughly how much should someone pay for a book like this, or say the algebra by Blitzer book. I looked on Amazon and they were 300 or so. Seems a lot?
