This video documents four elements of successfully managing the platform business model based on a systematic review of 333 academic articles published on the topic platform competition. The four themes are:
1) Network externalities and their implications
2) Platform ecosystems and corporate scope
3) Platform, complement, and user heterogeneity
4) Platform governance and ecosystem orchestration
The themes are illustrated by offering examples from industry, including video game consoles (Sony PlayStation), smart phones (iOS App Store), social media (Facebook), and microfinancing (Kiva).
The video was recorded as part of a Master's level course on business strategy offered by the UCL School of Management (MSIN0072), UCL.
