tushishvilli osoto was the cleanest i've seen in a while. How perfect was that timing to catch him on the way in. I replayed that part so many times🤤

1:20 The problem is the belt wrap, it's impossible to shrimp and create space with that grip. It's like having the hips attached to the ground, nailed, glued, whatever.

9:16 in the kata demonstrations both feet leave the ground but it's still a sasae (technically a 'harai' is a sweep)

1:20 to escape in BJJ id want to address the hips and try to get my knees back in front of my opponent and try to work for the sweep, depending on if I can get control of an arm but it risks getting put flat on your back for a moment while you try to get your knees in, being pinned doesn’t end a match in BJJ it just puts you down on points so people won’t exert as much energy to keep the pin like they would in judo

Along the sasae/ harai tsuri komi ashi debate, someone who is excellent at both in my dojo usually calls it a harai when they sweep the legs away behind the uki going forward as opposed to a sasae where the uki is being pulled onto the sweeping leg. I’m definitely not an expert but thought I’d share this perspective 😄

Are you doing a video on the upcoming All Japan Weight Class Championships?

Yang was the only one to escape from Fukuda's pin during his world champion run, and he did the exact same thing here which is focus on the legs first.

Fukoda mount - it's about time, you are not expected to escape in BJJ in 20 sec. It must be hard as F to get out but not impossible. He would be expected to progress to sub and maybe that leaves an opening. But no question, he is world class

1:10 this is not "easy" to escape; Fukoda is rather high up and to the side so the normal "straighten the legs to break the grapevine" is not likely to work to loosen the legs - you can see Yang try about 5-7 seconds in. It would be better if he pulled Fukoda down onto himself first but still very difficult. Fukoda is also on spread out on ground with a really strong base in the direction that Yang has to turn to escape (due to his left arm being entangled). Anyone who thinks this is simple has not been pinned by an experienced judoka or expects to have all the time in the world to do so instead of 10-20 seconds.

For me, if someone tries to pin me, I just fake passing out like a goat. They'll often let go and check to make sure I'm still alive, then I just go to sleep.

3:13 agreed don't get there and you won't be in it 😂

To be frank, I think most BJJ guys could probably escape Fukuda’s pin… if they had time. The biggest problem I’ve seen over the years from people transitioning from BJJ to Judo is mostly just a lack of clock awareness. A lot of people consider “proper” BJJ to be about intermittent progression to better positions, but that doesn’t really pan out in Judo well.

Having said all that and also had the pleasure of doing Judo with some fairly high level guys over the years, I’m willing to bet Fukuda is just really strong, too. I’m sure that for the required handful of seconds needed to get the win, this pin is difficult.

I’m very sure the escape is “simple”—kipping probably—but I have sincere doubts it’s “easy.” The conditions particular to Judo mean the escape has to happen pretty quickly. Not to mention the person being pinned has to put their remaining gas tank against Fukuda’s.

I have no doubt full-time, high level BJJ guys are infinitely and technically superior to Judo guys on the ground. But I also tend to think most BJJ guys underestimate how quickly you are required to escape from these pins in a Judo context.

1:29 I think the two most basic escapes from this position are the trap n roll/shrimp escape combo. I feel like jiujiteiros would would be more proficient at comboing the bridge to the shrimp. It looks like there is a point where the American, after bridging, could have got his opposite leg to the ground and shrimped towards the opponents right hand. Ill have to play around with this at the gym next time.

Perhaps a technique breakdown on Matvey Kanikovskiy would be nice. He is really dominant at -100 currently.

Kipping escape, I think that would be a good option against Fukudas pin.

the problem with escaping pins and bjj is that they have time to work on it or exploit the others bc they have to work for a submission
judoka is a sprint and holding someone down for 10/20 sec in a gi is very different ball game then working 6-10 minutes on newaza alone
although judokas have to learn to bridge and/or shrimp properly what i have seen, that would save a lot of pin situations BEFORE it is fully established

He might have been able to post on the leg and hip and shimmy his legs free. But he just flailed his legs. Post and shimmy was his only chance imo. Ultimately hard to know without recreating it with a similarly skilled Judoka.
