Web dev jobs maybe simplified, sped up in terms of production time, but "obsolete" I don't think so. That AI will always need someone to tell it what to do, and imagine you want to build an Angular base web app, can that AI do it start to end without human input?, I don't think so. The same hype hit the waves when Github Copilot was introduced but now people just work with it, and even sometimes ignore it. I wouldn't want to give a client a project that I don't even understand or know the kind of code written behind it.

on stack overflow you can leverage many delepores expreiences and get responses and decide which one is the best for your use case. Also by inspecting many possible solutions and responces you also learn for the purpose of learning. Like they sais there are many ways to skin a cat and solution that CharGpt is giving you is not the bets possible unless you see tem all.

This is using stackoverflow data and trained with that (i think so), what happens when everyone start and use this instead, how would this keep up with new code updates ? When nobody uses stackoverflow anymore?

I have learn html css, JavaScript. A little react and am currently learning node js and server side programming in general. It’s taken me years to get where I am, but today I feel dejected and that I’ve waste the last few years!! Tough to take, as an entry level programmer, is there any point in me continuing my journey!?

As a test I asked it to sort out the 20 methods I had in my class that all rely on the same array, it suggested passing the array around and separating methods into different classes which have the array as a property. I said “no they may lead to incosistencies if I target the array from one class directly in another without calling a method from the class where the array is Iniitally instantiated. As a response it done exactly how I would have set it out an wrote me a full observer / pub/sub pattern to solve this. Pretty incredible really.

This won’t replace engineers but it will reduce the demand of engineers given that the companies will not require hundred of engineers to increase productivity but very few seniors that can type the right commands and start churn code. Now each company has to hire more to increase resources and therefore productivity but this changes everything

I think need for programming in general will in great deal become obsolete in future.
Today we have user guides and API pages etc.
Highly possible in the future these will be converted into learning datasets for AI. Use for programmers will become secondary priority.
For example, when Microsoft releases new framework update it will contain AI training sets. Then tools like chatGPT will use those to learn new features and GPT will instruct devs how to use it, create samples and produce templates based on high level inputs. AI might even help devs to integrate new features and APIs into existing code base, all done in matter of seconds.
In a way AI could be next step beyond high level programming languages. Programmers will for many tasks give English language instructions to AI to produce most of the boilerplate code. SW devs will only monitor and work on high level architecture.

Remember when around ten years ago, when AI was editing people's papers, all the smug programmers were telling literary editors, "You're a dinosaur, just learn to code." My, my, how the times have changed 🤣!

Ehh ... I tried it out. I gave it a problem that it didn't know how to solve. First it was going in an infinite loop between solutions that didn't work. It'd agree with me that a solution didn't work. When I explicitly ruled out both solutions to stop the infinite loop it gave me something that made no sense and crashed. What was cool was that it was atleast learning the language from me over time through our conversation :). I picked one of the most obscure niche languages possible with extremely unique algorithms that almost no coder ever runs into to try and break it and I succeeded :D. One of the algorithms I asked it to write ... it came back to me with "that is impossible to write" so I wrote it into chat and it was like "touche". *edit* after 20 minutes it's still frozen.

if you think an a.i. like chatgpt can replace software developers, you are not a very good developer. it is a tool that developers can use. try to let an average person who has no knowledge of programming make a full complicated application only with the information chatgtp provides. it's not happening.
