Tallinn, Estonia has to be one of my favorite cities you have shown us. I could just imagine the old city as it once was back in time. Beautiful.

Haha, "it makes you almost want to need one" when you were looking at the walking sticks. Great video as usual... from a Canadian follower...see you in the next video.

Nice! I flyting from Texas to Helsinki then ferry ride to Tallinn where I'll be for couple days and have already scheduled my free tour (tip). I'll be there for the Christmas market. Then I'll be in Warsaw for couple nights before going to Civitavecchia to board a cruise for 18day back to USA. I was scheduled to visit Sofia Bulgaria earlier this year, but had a family emergency. Thanks for sharing!

You mentioned that one does not need a tour in Tallinn. I would disagree. We've done walking tours in Vilnius, Riga and now Tallinn. While a bit smaller, it's almost always great to personally hear the perspective of a knowledgeable and trained local. It's something we do in every city we visit for the first time-have never regretted it.

Tallan and St. Pertersburg were our favorite ports. In St. Petersburg, we recommend SPB Tours that had a two day tour of 17 hours. We saw so much more than the ships tours and was expertly managed.

I don’t know if you saw the big heavy door half way between the top and lower part of the Old City. If I remember my guide, she said that the affluent lived at the top of the city and the poorer at the bottom. The big door was closed at night to stop the poorer coming up

Those "gooseberries" are red currants, they grow on a bush and are a common garden staple. As are gooseberries. Perhaps you were thinking of lingonberries or cranberries, which do grow in forests.

The towers that you entered the Old Town through (Viru gates) are unfortunately only tiny pretowers that are left from the Middle Ages. The gate (and all the others) consisted of many pairs of pre- and post towers and the main gate. None of the main gates have survived.
And today it is sort of the main gate to enter the Old Town. But it was quite an insignificant gate in the Middle Ages. The main one was at the port, the Maritime gate, as most people entered from the port. That gate was right on the beach back then, now the sea is a lot further away. The Viru gate where you entered just connected some roads from local villages with the town.

Not a good entrance for first time visitors. Nothing happens when you enter, no magically different Old town. You enter the main tourist street that is just a cliche tourist street with very little left from previous times

True, Tallinn is another world at night, I would really recommend it. Also, the lighting is designed so that you can see different levels of building. It is especially nice at Christmas. During Covid lockdown the City was made esp nice with special lit animal sculptures so that it all looked like a magical northern forest. So people would not get too depressed before Christmas with no events or concerts because of the lockdown.
It is completely safe at night as well, so I recommend to walk around in the dark, and walk beyond the touristy streets to get the real feeling of the place.

Yes, we are a quiet place and a quiet culture. Proud of it. No need to talk louder than you have to, is our motto. If the person you are talking to, is right there, why yell?

A tour would be good actually, so that one would walk through the entire Old town, not just the main tourist streets. And to find out about the city.

Thanks. Great video that old town looks like it’s the set of a Disney movie. St. Petersburg has always been on my bucket list because I enjoy Russian history, especially, Catherine, the great.
