What were the Opium Wars?

In the 19th century as with today, companies and nations were desperate to unlock the commercial potential of China. Colossal amounts were at stake.

And the British found the "perfect" commodity to trade: opium.

The only snag being its tendency to riun lives, communities and if unchecked, entire nations. The Chinese court of course responded and made the trade illegal. Hence, war.

The Opium Wars (1839-42 and 1856-60) were thus the attempt to force open Chinese ports to the opium trade. Britain and its ally France were successful; the money and devastation rolled on.
