I think I understand why Xiomara's mother was that overbearing. Her mother wanted to commit her life to Catholicism, but her family forced her into a marriage with a man in order to have a better life. Now her mother was basically stuck with a man she didn't really want to be with, who doesn't fully exemplify the kind of God-fearing man who would match her devotion to God and the church. Her mother was trying to live the life she couldn't fulfill in her youth through Xiomara, and not allowing Xiomara the agency to her own life. She also probably saw Xiomara being with a man as a mistake and probably history repeating itself; she didn't want Xiomara stuck with a man she wasn't meant to be with, or in a less than virtuous position as woman.
Your thoughts on The Poet X just gave me that realization. I hadn't thought that deeply about the driving force of her mother, so this video was an inspiration.
Yeah, I too was curious about Xavier's story line as well.
I participated in Black-A-Thon, and I had fun with it. It was great to challenge myself to read more than one for the both, and different kinds of books as well. The Poet X was definitely me trying something I wasn't expecting to connect with so strongly.
Great review and discussion. I enjoyed it a lot.

Great video and review. Also I think this book was chosen for Blackathon because the author identifies herself as Afrolatina and I believe the character is also. Just because someone is Latina doesn't mean they aren't also Black.

We read the poet X and did a discussion piece on our channel for Blackathon too and had mixed feelings.

I've really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the books you've been reading for #Blackathon. That's cool that you understood enough Spanish to process the parts where it was used in the book.

I have the hardcover but also listened to the audiobook. I feel like it really brought all the emotion home. Though I get what you are saying about the visual being helpful.

I'm in the process of reading Elizabeth Acevedo's With Fire on High. It's about a teen mom trying to finish school and she has a passion for cooking. It's not told in verse like The Poet X but I've been enjoying it just as much.

I reviewed The Poet X on my channel with a spoken word piece, in case you'd like to check it out.

I can really relate to X... I’m going thru very similar problems with my mother about my sexuality

Great discussion/thoughts of the book and the things that you like or didn't like. I actually appreciated the audiobook version but that is probably bc I am not a reader of poetry, so that story format worked for me through audio. (Sorry my computer/keyboard was acting up)
