The Putting Drill That Saves 5 Strokes Per Round (GOLF PUTTING TIPS)

This putting drill seems like it covers golf putting basics, but if you really want to learn how to putt and improve your putting stroke, this is one of the best golf putting lessons for you to learn.

When it comes to simple golf putting tips, it does not get much easier to improve your putting stroke than this drill. Using just your trail hand to improve your putting technique, use a little forward shaft lean and get the proper ball position to help you make more solid contact with your putter.

Most amateur golfers have too much loft at impact, and have their putter ball position too far forward, resulting in hopping shots that skip and roll poorly. Instead, this putting drill helps you load the putter properly, while maintaining the proper putter loft through impact.

While I did not use the drill, I did change my set up to add more forward shaft lean and a slight ascending stroke. Much to my surprise, the ball did come off the putter face much more smoothly. Great tip.

I tried this drill today inside because it is winter in Michigan. First time was pretty awesome and I will continue until I can get outside. Thank you

Todd, a bit dubious, I did try putting w just my right hand and found it worked better than any other putting stroke I've been experimenting with. For a playing stroke, I've adapted this drill to a split-hand grip holding the bottom of my putter handle in my R palm & top in my L palm but with my L-hand knuckles squeezed against my R wrist, essentially locking the shaft to my forearms. For the first time in ages, I've been able to controll my putting stroke solely by my shoulder pivot back & forward with a bit of forward shaft lean without any hand or wrist twitch at the moment of contact. Many thanks!

Excellent video Todd! I have done the right hand only drill and it does work! I use a center ball position on set up; however, I don't have the putter shaft with a slight lean forward. I have been pointing the butt end towards my belly button. I will definitely try your suggestion! Good Job Todd! Keep up the good work!!

Amazing! After 50 years of experimentation, I believe right hand putting with forward shaft lean is correct! I do put my left hand on the putter, but I put best when a have a super light grip with that hand. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!

I actually lag putt better with 1 hand but my body is facing the hole rather than from the side as usual. My stroke is better because I'm allowing the putter to swing rather than control it with my arms & shoulders. For me, it doesn't work well on short putts. It's harder to control the speed. I'm talking about putts in the 5 to 10 foot distance, but for lag putting, it's great. It's actually easier to see the line when you're over the putt. I'm not talking about straddling the line. You still address the ball from the side with feet close together.

Great tip. My putting seem to drag the ball to the left and usually off target by couple on inches. So in most cases to compensate i would slightly aim right and my pull run the ball to target.. i seem not to know when i need to stop after impact

I have been a one arm putter for years. Started by using this drill. Can nail most putts. Took many shots off my game. Get a lot of crazy looks on the course though.

This tip is great, however for someone like me doing the right-hand/dominant hand drill is difficult as even though I play right handed I am actually left handed, so my dominant hand is still my left hand, I had to ditch playing left handed and learn to at right handed because when I took up golf you couldn't really find left handed clubs unless you wanted a set of golden Bears which I couldn't afford so I got a cheap set of right handed and learnt to play that way, I still carry and use a left handed club in my bag for when I'm stuck up against a tree stump or something, but I'm sure with grit and determination I could get this to work, but I tend to putt with my left hand and right hand flat against the shaft as if I'm ushering it along

Interesting video. I have putted cross grip for years (front hand is lower). I am wandering how this impacts your loft/shaft lean, slight assent concept? Keep these videos coming!

Another great video Todd. I'm a bit "unusual" (ok...strange) and would appreciate your thoughts. I play golf right handed however, I'm left throw a ball, shoot baskets, play racquet sports, etc all left handed. Based on your comments in the vid, do you think I should use the drill only using my lead (left hand). I do feel that I do have "touch" or control in my right hand (learned skill over the years I guess). Thanks!

Great tip. One thing I noticed on the slo mo is that your follow through is consistently shorter than your backswing. Doesn't that go against the usual thought of equal backswing and follow through to avoid deceleration? I do plan to try the tip.

I watched your video and practiced for two days. Today I made 4 birdies and won more than $400! It works very well! I made 6 puts I usually mis.

Todd, I saw that, in response to left-handed golfers who play right-handed, you still recommended using the trail hand for this drill. I've been struggling with putting forever and am wondering whether I should switch to left-handed for putting. I've always batted and golfed right-handed but do everything else left-handed.

Hey Todd the one handed putting drill for tempo you demonstrated is great but I was wondering what if someone (me) is left handed but writes right handed so is right hand dominent should he do this drill using his right hand instead of his left or should he be using the right hand low instead if the reverse overlap grip. Thanks Nick and Todd love the videos.

What should you do if you golf righted handed but your left hand dominant?

I tested it and I do! I do add loft on my swing and follow through. Most likely where I lose distance control. Guess it is time to practice your putting drill. Thanks. BTW, not sure what you were using the Rimer for..I'll check it out on the Carsley webpage

Hi Todd, great drill. Question: If you putt cross-handed (left hand low), should you do this drill with the left instead of right? It seems like the left hand is dominant hand for cross-handed putters. Maybe do the drill on right & left hand?
