sadhus and samyasis (those who have renounced the worldly attachments) were mandated to protect Dharma, temples, Mathas (monasteries) and the devotees who were followers of these institutions, they trained to build muscle power. These Akhadas became the centres of physical exercises, body building and games such as wrestling.


Shankaracharya appealed to Brahmin and Kshatriya families to send their young ones to these Akhadas for the intellectual progress and protection of culture and the nation. He organised them in the Akhadas for protection of the institutions of Dharma.

Over the past 1, 300 years, Naga Sanyasis and their force got divided into seven Akhadas. First to come into existence was Ahvaan Akhada. It was followed by Atal Akhada, Niranjani Akhada, Mahanirvani Akhada, Anand Akhada, Juna Akhada and Agni Akhada.

Akhadas have subordinate bodies called Marhis, or regional centres. There are 52 Marhis. Each of them is different from the other yet they all maintain same Sanatan tradition.

Apart from the seven Akhadas of the Shaiva sect, there are three — Nirvani, Nirmohi and Digambar — belonging to the Vaishnav Vairagis, and two — Bada Udasin and Naya Udasin Akhads — the Udasin Samyasis. Besides, there is an Akhada of the Sikh Samyasis called the Nirmal Akhada.
