This is no joke video or fake logo, folks. Universal really does own the rights to this film…at least in part. Long story short, this was a co-production of ITC and United Artists, with ITC the main financier. Originally, UA was not interested in producing another Panther film after the disastrous “Inspector Clouseau” seven years earlier. Eventually, they came aboard when they made an agreement with ITC founder Lew Grade on the profits and distribution. A few years after the film’s release, the rights reverted back to ITC, but via a series of subsequent transactions involving ownership of ITC passing on to ITV, the film’s rights are now divided. Universal, via its ties with Polygram (who owned ITC at one point) now owns all rights to this film (hence the logo you see here as taken from a recent home video release), with the major exception of domestic theatrical, television, and digital rights, which are now with MGM, owner of UA, which is why when you see this film on cable TV or streaming, you would see the MGM logo instead of Universal’s.
