How Have Singapore's Coastlines Changed Over The Years? | Lost Waterfronts | CNA Documentary

Singapore’s Eastern and Southern coastlines underwent massive reclamation to make room for places like Marine Parade, Changi Airport and MBS. Once, they were part of the sea and they saw a lot of action. This hour-long documentary peels open intriguing stories, now brought back to life with quirky animation.

Why did the Dutch and Portuguese battle off the coast of Tanah Merah in 1603, why did the Okinawans come to prewar Siglap and help to create a local food tradition, why was early day Singapore full of ‘mountains’ and how did they get destroyed?

Random Fact: Marine Parade was the largest Land Reclamation project in singapore's history, The coastline was extended by to 15KM out. Everything left of Nicoll Highway was nothing but water before this extension happened.

50 years ago, Changi Beach was the go-to place for over-night camping during the school holidays. Those were happy and fun days for teenagers.

Do read Mr Yeo Hong Eng’s book, The Little Red Cliff! It’s very insightful. He used to be a teacher at my primary school and gave us all signed copies of his book :)
