The Problem with Rocket League in Fortnite

Rocket Racing has just been released in Fortnite. Until now, no one really knew what to expect with it. Will it be similar to Rocket League at all? What does it mean for actual Rocket League? Today, I answer these questions and more.

Thanks to @CBellRL and @Virge for joining me in some of the games!

My big concern with Rocket Racing being released largely comes from the fact that many of the Rocket League developers revealed that this was the big project they had been working on for the past couple years. While we all thought the Rocket League developers were working on Unreal Engine 5 or some other big plans for Rocket League, it turns out that they were working on something that wasn't even coming to Rocket League at all. It's disappointing to say the least, and it's why I'm concerned about what this means for the future of Rocket League as well.

Thanks to Epic Games and Psyonix for the creator code.

It feels like a betrayal to be told “we’re working on new content for the game” and that new content has nothing to do with the game we love. It’s just disappointing

people keep saying that "rocket racing was the reason why trading got removed" but for me they're using rocket racing as an excuse to get rid of it. all epic want is our money, so if you can't trade anymore, you gotta buy the items from the item shop. biggest asshole move i have seen in this game

When Epic bought Rocket League, the community was worried the game would become a neglected cash grabber. It took some time, but Epic delivered! Waiting for an indie developer to make a spiritual successor. Feels like just a matter of time before Epic shuts down even more servers to prioritize their bigger cash machines.

the saddest part about the nonexistent updates in rocket league is that the community has both EXPLAINED and MADE what we would love to see in the game. its not just "we want an update!" its "this is explicitly what we want here is a way to implement it" (custom maps for example)

This mode would’ve been so much better in rocket league itself. With all the movement tech and demos it would’ve been perfect and easy to integrate

I think they should just listen to the community before the game just dies.

Honestly the way Epic treat us is just embarassing

Epic’s doing what other game companies are too scared to do… destroy their game 😂

The drifting in rocket racing just makes me want to play Trackmania's Canyon environment.

Imagine putting Rocket League in Fortnite and having actual people as the audience instead of our Egg overlords.

I usually play Rocket League with about 140 ping, so I could imagine the hell I will experience if I get this game

They actually pulled Rocket League developers off RL to do... this. That has to be a massive april fools joke that was just too late.
"Oh yeah, we're definitely working on something big and new - just not for the game you think"

To have content and features removed from an actual game in favor of a mini game that will only see short-term success speaks volumes as to how epic games sees and treats us.

At this rate they should just make the game open source and let the community update it regularly lmfao

I just dont get why at the end with the dev tweets they were all like "omg yayy this is so emotional im very glad my project has been revealed now" its like bruh this whole time its been a FORTNITE MODE??? Has nothing to do with RL and no wonder the games gotten more stale lately

Crazy how inverted gameplay feels normal now. At first driving upside down always messed with my brain. Now it feels weird if it’s not backwards when upside down

The irony at the end of telling us he is working on something big and that's why he didn't upload. Please don't let it be a rocket racing project aswell

One of my favorite games of all time was "Battlerite" an arena battle game with incredible gameplay and high skill ceiling. The devs decided to instead of working on this great base of a game to instead work on a Battle Royale version of the game. The playerbase was devastated. The Battle Royale version flopped, and the devs tried to implement some of their Battle Royale ideas to the Arena Battler version which trashed the game. The arena players game were ruined and the royale version flopped.
This feels similar in many ways. I just assumed Epic made Rocket Racing and not Psyonix. I am deeply concerned that Psyonix isnt putting in enough effort into improving rocketleague and instead watering out the IP.
I really wish the entire psyonix put all their love and heart into improving Rocket League and the (alleged) UE5 version.

That tm8 bumping you at kick off on the 1st match...I felt that. So did my ancestors.

I think Epic looks at RL like this: The existing players are not putting much more money into the game. They have their Fennecs and they re-earn the Rocket Pass credits each season. We are not the players Epic is looking for.

But the Fortnite kids (and anyone else who doesn't already play RL), they haven't paid for imaginary stuff in RL yet. They are the "players" Epic is looking for. So the game will be changed to entice them to spend more money on it, and we, who have played the game since release, don't matter.

There is only one solution: competition. How many FPS games and MOBAs are there? Why is there only one (serious) car soccer game? Someone should fix that.
