John Hicks, so much feel and passion in his playing. Not well known enough, he was
so talented.

John Hicks is up there with the top post-Bill Evans pianists (Hancock, Tyner, Corea et al) and Betty Carter is the jazziest of jazz singers, jazz cannot get better than this. Thanks for posting and thanks to NRK for hosting these jazz geniuses in top quality so we can enjoy these amazing performances almost half a century later, peace 🙏

Carmen Mc Rae once stated in an interview that she felt that Betty Carter was the only real jazz singer out there

9.9k views is criminal. But atleast some of us have been lucky enough to find this gem.

You can tell that Ratzo Harris is a fan of Betty's. His body language is so open and receptive to her, he often chuckles to himself when she does something brilliant and you get the feeling that he is specifically playing in accompaniment to her. This was one of her best trio line-ups.

I saw Betty Carter perform several times in the mid-90s -- nearly 20 years after this performance -- and her voice did not change at all. If you told me that this was Carter at Blues Alley (Washington DC) 1995, I would totally believe you.

Listening to her sing was at first for me like watching a great artist painting modern art on a canvas at first you don't get it then you do I love her but I have to admit she had to grow on me because of her unusual style of singing she is not a conventional jazz diva and I guess thats part of her genius

If jazz musicians were Jedi, Betty Carter would have the highest midi-chlorian count.

She really looks like she's having fun here. Especially the scat parts. All those young people in the audience! Seems like the audiences are mostly older now.
