She is a was...a true lyricist. Very rare. Such perfection. And not her notes, and of course the scat singing. Carman is my favorite... Love her too with Sass. Todays singers only know how to belt.

This is a damn good live recording. That's what I love about the Jazz singers of the past. Whatever they did in the studio they were able to duplicate it live. Now, it's rare for an artist, especially in mainstream music, to even come close to the sounds of their recordings

You probably shouldn't consider yourself a jazz aficionado until you can hear the name Carmen McRae and go "Oh yeah...one of the greats, consummate artist, or whatever." Nobody could get more emotional mileage out of an elegant phrase with less adornment than she. She "painted" with her voice often impressionistically and left you with the feeling that the world just got better. I hope her memory lasts forever.

Killer singing, ridiculously good piano break too. One of the all time greats.

A lot of folks don't realize that Carmen is a piano player herself, and I always thought this is one of the reasons she approaches singing a song from a structural and harmonic point of view -- often times, it seems to me that she's singing the chord changes, and I always pay attention to her choice of notes -- notice the way she closes out this song. btw, she is the "lounge piano player" in the movie "Hotel."  :)

I was fortunate enough to see Miss McRae perform in 1981. Two friends bought me a ticket to her show as a birthday present. She was sensational! She had a great respect for lyrics. I remember seeing her on the Tonight Show years earlier discussing how important it was for the listener to be able to understand every word in the lyrics. And then there was her vocal instrument...magnificent! Thank you Miss McRae. Your music will always be heard and appreciated.

Why don't we hear such great songs and melodies anymore?? This is one of the best versions of My Foolish heart..Carmen Mcrae put in so much feeling and pathos. God bless her soul.

A good example of how she was always able to wring every bit of emotion out a songs lyrics. There was no one better.

This is my favorite version. Carmen brings this to life with both realism and magic.

The more I listen to her, the more the word 'underrated' comes into my head. She was always well-respected, but somehow never elevated to Jazz Goddess status. Maybe that's a good thing. When we stop worshiping, we start really listening. And she's worth hearing. Wish I'd seen her live. Saw Sarah Vaughn once. At The Blue Note in Greenwich Village. It wasn't much fun, really. Everyone but me was smoking (this was in the 80's). It felt like people were just there to see Sarah Vaughn. To say they had seen her, like I'm doing now. So hardly anyone heard her. I left after one set. For my money, Carmen McRae was at least as good, but see--her I can just experience as a mortal being with an immortal voice. And that's better. You feel me?
